Dear Friends:
Mahatma Gandhi's mass meetings I never had the opportunity to attend as they were before my time. But I have had the good fortune to participate in many public meetings addressed by Jawaharlal Nehru from 1948 till his death in 1964. Gosh! what crowds he used to attract in all parts of India!! He and, of course, Mahatma Gandhi were real All-India leaders. Indira Gandhi was also an All-India leader; Rajiv Gandhi to a lesser extent. Since their time India has not produced a single leader who had an All-India appeal -- one who could attract the masses from all parts of India.
Modi has changed that pattern.
Cheers,
Ram

Narendra Modi's public rallies draw mammoth crowds each time. The sheer scale of these gatherings boggles the imagination. As the images below demonstrate, this is one aspect of Modi's public appearances that goes largely unmentioned in mainstream media accounts.
