advice on mid-range android phone, and on tablet

folks,
i have been asked to recommend a mid-range android phone for a woman (she specified android as she is running a master's thesis project on that OS) and a tablet for a 10-year-old boy.

what do you folks recommend?

these need to be fairly cost-effective. they have charged me with giving them good advice.

i have had a samsung note, a sony ericsson x10 mini, and a nokia e62 as my flagship phones, along with dumbphones as backups. the sony didn't last very long: only about 2.5 years, which i though was rather a short lifetime for a mid-range phone. so i am a little biased against sony.

i shall be grateful for your suggestions.

What's the location - India or abroad?

Here's a good rediff feature

A safe option would be Samsung Galaxy Grand - but price-wise it is ~Rs. 21,500.

However, one may go in for products from the likes of Micromax and Lava who in fact offer much better hardware at lower price but poor service. Lava Iris 502 seems like a real good value option at ~Rs.8,500 and comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.1.

If one can get their hands on Micromax A116 - that too is a great phone at ~Rs. 14500, but currently out of stock.
