it was never surpassed until the age of steamships.
he did something unbelievable -- crossed a 1000 miles of ocean with an enormous flotilla and conquered the maritime srivijaya empire in sumatra.
yet, we know nothing about this.
that was contrived by british historians, who made up the stories of how indians had never ventured outside the subcontinent. and all this bullshit about pacifism was made up by gandhi and believed by us gullible idiots, as we have lost all sense of history.
also, the british thought there were 'martial races', mostly punjabis, marathas, rajputs, afghans, and they despised the rice-eating tamils (and bengalis). it never could have occurred to them that tamils had a great empire.
the same about the 'forgotten empire', vijayanagar.
i think i have david key's history of india, but i have never read it.
