Soccer is gaining popularity in India. Could it one day surpass cricket in popularity?

I hope so - it's a much more athletic sport. I'd like to see Indian in the World Cup Soccer playoffs one day. I think it would be great if there was even an Indian soccer equivalent of IPL.

Soccer is popular in socialist and communist countries while sports that allow for individual excellence are popular in places where communism is frowned upon. Look at Europe and Latin America. They are semi-communist. Within India, the two places where soccer is very popular are West Bengal and Kerala..
The rise in popularity is confined to watching, not playing. Moreover, we have opted to choke our cities with cars, so there is very little place for children to play.
