dave allen used to be my absolute favorite comic. i think PBS used to have him regularly, but i suspect the jesus freaks got rid of his program. i remember his shows whe he didn't have so much grey hair. i didn't know he died, but apparently he did in 2005. anyway, RIP, dave allen, you were a great guy!
the reason i loved his stuff:
1. the guy's deadpan delivery and sense of timing was fabulous
2. he came across as the utter stereotype of the good-times irishman: voluble, charming, handsome, great raconteur, always a smoke in one hand and a whiskey in another (he's the guy vijay mallya would give his eye teeth to be) (and i liked the fact that he had lost the tip of one finger, but managed the whiskey glass and cigarette just fine without the digit)
3. he just loved to skewer the roman catholics and especially the godman of the day, the pope fellow
4. there were these incredible skits in which dave would put on the pope godman regalia and do these amazing things that were totally ROTFL funny
5. the godman would always be getting carried around in a palanqin borne by a bunch of lesser godman. in one uproarious skit that i shall never forget, the palanquin passes by some people water skiing. the godman says something to the flunkey, and moments later he is being carried, still in palanquin, by a bunch of minor godmean waterskiing in unison and holding up the palanquin!
sadly, i am only remembering the PG-rated stuff. there was, of course, great scatological and sexual humor as well, almost all of it skewering the pompous papists. utterly hilarious, and i guess i should look on youtube for more. please check him out.
this little excerpt is purely PG, but hilarious nevertheless. father son and in the hole 'e goes, indeed!
christopher hitchens, of course, is another favorite, although he is usually not droll.
one limey that i actually like, compared to almost all of them who are creeps. although i generally have liked irishmen and scotsmen. they too hate the limeys and the scots are threatening to secede, therefore making it truly the "Untied Kingdom"

i am not ashamed to say that i use it often.
such a totally hindu line, don't you think? of course it would infuriate the semites totally because they couldn't countenance the notion that their dreadful little god was not the only one around.
