happy makara sankranti to all

jan 14th, 2009

may this uttarayanam bless you with all good things.

happy belated winter solstice (we do need to get our calendar adjusted for the precession of the equinoxes!)

happy makaravilakku for the bhaktas of sabarimala sri ayyappan. but isn't it sad that the festival has to be held under tight security? http://www.dailypioneer.com/149849/Makara-Jyoti-today-Heavy-rush-and-tight-security-in-Sabarimala.html

happy pongal to tamils.

happy kite festival for gujaratis. i was in ahmedabad a couple of years ago at this time, and i was impressed by the vibrant gujarat meet. it appears as though there is serious money coming into gujarat. the place works.

i don't know what this festival is called in other parts of the country, but whatever it is, may the good Lord be with you.

The harvest festival, celebrated across India with different names:
In Northern India, (esp. Punjab): - Lohri
In Eastern India: Bihar - Sankranti, West Bengal and Assam - Bhogali Bihu (or is it Magh Bihu? Please clarify)
In Southern India: In Tamilnadu - Pongal, In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh - Sankranthi
In Western India: Gujarat and Rajasthan - Uttarayan (Kite flying festival)

Wish you a Happy Sankranti / Pongal / Bihu / Lohri…. (belated)
