IHT.com Article: What role for emerging India as a U.S. ally?

feb 20th, 2007

there is no need for india to become america's lackey. it's hard enough being china's and saudi arabia's simultaneously. no more bosses please!

and india should ally with whom it damn well pleases. if the US is in a hissy fit with iran, it's not india's problem. and sucking up to the myanmarese generals is actually a very good idea, before they give more islands (including the Cocos, generously given to burma by j. nehru in the 1950s) to the chinese.

this giridhardas fails to see that india might just possibly have a few teeny weeny interests of its own, rather than just being worried about america's interests.

although you have to wonder in light of ashok mitra's bombshell that manmohan singh is um... rather close to the US, and got his job as finmin because of US pressure. i love it when the marxists run around shouting embarrassing things from the rooftops. this is good.

Why should India be an ally of the US, like the UK? If it helps India and the US both, there will be strategic partnerships. India should look after its own interests, just the the US does. Moreover, did the US support India either on the UN sec. gen. issue or the permanent member issue? Why not? Why is the US so shook up about Burma when it supports Pakistan and S. Arabia?

What role for emerging India as a U.S. ally?
By Anand Giridharadas

Washington sees New Delhi as a natural fit to help further its interests in the region. But India has charted an unpredictable diplomatic course in the last year and a half, cozying up to the rulers of Myanmar, Sudan and Iran.
