re bodhidharma, it is fairly well established that he set sail for the east (zen koan: why did bodhidharma go east?) from kodungalloor (muziris) in kerala after having been trained in kalari payat. tamil legend says he was a pallava prince from kanchi. the two may not be mutually exclusive, ie. he could have been a pallava prince who went to kerala to study kalari payat.

anyway, not only did he instruct the shaolin monks in china in unarmed combat, from which comes kung fu, karate etc., he then went to japan to create the zen school. they still honor him as 'daruma', the preceptor, in japan.

what a guy!
