And disenfranchisement. Real democracy was never a feature of the nation; as the literacy levels shoot up, they become more and more disinterested in the political process.
This is evidenced by the polling percentages.
Interestingly, there was a huge hue and cry after the Mumbai aftermath with people from all walks of life coming on the streets. How much did that translate into real polling percentages? Urban areas see the worst outcomes.
Nevertheless, the fever pitch intensity that reaches before the polls is related more to the interest in person who is able to crack the "formula" to get "elected". Interests get aligned to jump on the bandwagon and partake the gravy train to suck the udders of Government of India dry. Everyone makes money in this free for all.
The only way out is accountability at the local level. Broken roads, malfunctioning light fixtures, stinking piles of garbage need to be fixed by taking pro-active steps. The level of involvement need not be fixed on the "sarkar" alone. The sense of community cannot be alienated.
