trivandrum's classical music festival, sponsored by the travancore royal family. just in time for the makara sankranti. please let music lovers know about this.
makes me wish i were not so ignorant of classical music. sigh! just as there is a culture of rasikas enjoying classical music and dance in chennai in the winter months, i hope a core group of enthusiasts will arise in trivandrum -- although the average malayali is a philistine, and usually a drunkard, sadly.
incidentally the 'kuthiramalika' or horse-(pillared) mansion is a heritage property that it architecturally unique, with the rampant horses reminding you of the signature vijayanagar motif that is seen all over, including in srirangam and in kanchipuram and other major temples in tamil nadu.
unfortunately the exhibition of old weaponry at the mansion is a little disappointing. ancient swords and other metal objects are falling apart in the humidity. i was thinking about this when i visited a museum of medieval full-body armor and related items in vienna. that place was nicely climate-controlled so that the objects do not rust or deteriorate.

You might tell about the general rules too - that you are to be seated before the royal family arrives, that you are not to leave while the KING is there etc.
OT, Tarun Vijay in the TOI on the Lord Pashupatinath Temple.
sajan, i don't know if what you say is true, and if it is, i see nothing wrong with it. they are paying for the concert, and generally it is a matter of simple courtesy to honor the sponsors of an event.
this is what i heard from a friend who did attend yesterday's event:
==== begin quote ====
I attended the concert by Sanjay Subramaniam last evening. He was very good, and V and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I too wish my knowledge of raga and tala was better enabling me to better enjoy the finer points, but it was still a wonderful experience.
It was disappointing to see foreigners outnumber the Indians among the good audience that had collected. For reasons I cannot fathom, this series of music concerts does not appear to figure on the calendar of the music rasikas of Trivandrum.
