[what a great deal for india!] pak quid pro quo for india caving in on siachen: letting NATO trucks run

this is the other shoe dropping. i had been wondering what the US was getting for forcing india to withdraw from siachen. the answer: the US war effort in afghanistan continues as pak won't stop trucks from driving through.

what does india get in return for giving up the heights and control over the siachen glacier? undying love and affection from obama! what a deal!

that has to be the second-best deal the indian government has ever negotiated

the first-best deal? giving up india's substantial treaty rights in tibet in return for... absolutely nothing.

It's not the "Indian govt" it's the Congress govt. It's not what India is getting, but it's what the Congress Party is getting in return that's the incentive. It's quite natural for the US govt and the Congress Party to cut a deal that's to the exclusion of the Indian people. I think I made comments to this effect on the Economist website itself a couple of years back:
