phone recommendations

may 5th, 2012 CE

i asked you guys a couple of years ago about your suggestions for a good phone, as i needed to upgrade from my nokia e62 at the time. you gave me a number of good ideas, so i am asking for advice now.

i have a sony xperia x10 series phone, and i want to upgrade from it, but i want to stay with android.

my problems with the sony: a) while it is compact and thus easily carried around, i would like a bigger screen
b) the sony versions of the stock android apps (esp the call manager) are buggy. for instance it throws away some missed calls, which is annoying.
c) it has too little user memory
d) when i load it up with apps it gets noticeably sluggish
e) while the camera is good (5megapixel) and has a good LED flash, i cannot zoom it at all
f) battery life is pathetic (maybe 8 hours with moderate use), so i carry around an extra battery and a charger all the time

what i use it for most:
a) reading email
b) reading magazine content and newspapers, as well as listening to podcasts using google listen
c) cardiotrainer, a great app
d) weather app
e) google maps
f) casual photography and video

i remember two years ago, one of the good suggestions was a samsung wave phone, which has great hardware, but i didn't go with it because i don't think the bada os has a future.

so what do you think now is a good phone to buy?

I was one of those who suggested Samsung Wave (S8500) at the time. I had it with Bada 1 (customised to crap with 3 Ireland before shippment). Had noticed a bug in Bada 1. Since than I have got the phone firmware updated to Bada 2.1. Never had any problem since.

It is slim to carry around and does have great hardware.
If you are looking for newer models, go for Wave 3 if not beholden to Android. Otherwise consider Galasy S3 which seems to be good.

The only problem I see with Bada phones is that Navigation is a trial version valid for 30 days and you need to buy licence from Route66 if you want to use navigation.

thanks, guys. yes, sansk, it was your reco for the bada-based wave that i remembered. but i am invested in android -- have bought some apps and got used to them, so i want to stay on.

yes, the galaxy sIII sounds good, but the price is not yet known. and the motorola razr maxx looks good too.

how about others, like the galaxy nexus, or even the galaxy sII -- whose price will now drop?

also, any thoughts on the galaxy note?

These newer phones with their larger displays are going to be battery hogs. So it's useful to find out more about battery life on each. I haven't heard much about S3's battery life so far.
