BBC reports that Pakistan put itself on high alert after a hoax caller claiming to be Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee called up the Pakistani leadership and threatened to launch an immediate Indian attack on them.
I'm thinking that this might have been more than just a mere hoax call. It could have been an AlQaeda plot to start a war between India and Pakistan, as a diversion to relieve military pressure on AlQaeda. Note that the Pakistanis claim the call had ID signals that made it seem like it came from the Indian Foreign Ministry. Could AlQaeda either have infiltrated the foreign ministry office, or else simply found a way to fake the caller ID?

Faking caller ID is extremely easy. There are services on the web that you can subscribe to that let you do that easily. If caller ID is what they used to put the country on high alert, I have a few hundred million in the bank that I'd like to share with them. The only need to provide me with a few bits of information to show their sincerety.
A reader comment under the news in Economic Times (India) was: "Can anybody believe that a call is put through to the President of a country without verification?"
But if this really happened, it shows that the government machinery in pakistan is non-existent, and the country is ruled and administrated by lunatics.
It is very dangerous to have such a situation in a country that has nuclear weapons! World powers like usa should act immediately to destroy the pak nuclear weapons.

I find it hard to believe how anybody could imitate PranabDa's Bengali English accent. I doubt even Bengalis would be able to replicate it.
