first time an asian power defeated a european power in recent history, certainly in a naval engagement.
i got this from the new york time, but not sure if the year is accurate, because there were further battles in 1905.
On Jan. 2, 1905, Japanese Gen. Nogi received from Russian Gen. Stoessel at 9 o'clock P.M. a letter formally offering to surrender, ending the Russo-Japanese War.
is the NYT wrong by a year? wasn't the major battle of tsushima later? http://www.cityofart.net/bship/tsushima.html apparently the japanese trounced the russians then.
however, let us also remember how little travancore had defeated the dutch at the battle of colachel in 1741. see my piece on this from 1996. http://in.rediff.com/news/jan/14raj.htm
