A Hindustani concert for the classically inclined and world music enthusiasts. Hindustani music is the classical music system of Northern India and Pakistan. Evolving with diverse cultural influences over the years, the modern form of this 3000 year old tradition is renowned for its intricate raga system of melodic scales and vibrant improvisational nature. The sarod is a stringed musical instrument, that is one of the most popular and prominent instruments in the Hindustani tradition. It is known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound (contrast with the sweet, overtone-rich texture of the sitar) with sympathetic strings that give it a resonant, reverberant quality.

Shankar P. Bhattacharyya initially learnt Indian Classical Music on the Hawaiian guitar from the late Gopal Singhji of Gwalior, who first adapted this instrument to Indian music. In 1974 he went to Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (Baba) and became his disciple and started learning the Sarod. He has been a disciple since then and continues to learn from the late Baba's great music. He believes that the Indian Classical Music system, and in particular this music of Baba Ali Akbar Khan, is the gateway to spiritual realization and empowerment. Prof Bhattacharyya is the Robert M. Kennedy Professor of Electrical Engineering at Texas A & M University and an IEEE Fellow, with 6 books and over 200 papers in the field of Control Theory. Some samples of Prof Bhattacharyya's music may be found at http://www.youtube.com/user/spbsarode

Vikas Yendluri will accompany Prof. Bhattacharyya on the Tabla. Vikas has been a disciple of renowned tabla master, Ustad Arshad Syed for the last thirteen years. Vikas is currently a sophomore at Stanford.

The concert will be one and a half hours long and will be followed by an informal discussion.
