Pakistan: A failed state or a clever gambler?

BBC looks at whether Pakistan is merely a failing state, or rather a very clever gambler:

A few days after the Pakistani tests a government minister explained one of the reasons that decision was taken.

"We are a now nuclear state," he said. "So no-one can let us go bust. We may have turned down billions of dollars. But many more billions will follow."

How right he was.

Our irredentist Pakistani former masters show that they really know how to wield power, and understand what raw power is all about. Only those with a true Conquistador past like theirs can have that mentality.

Congress is not expected to shut off the nearly $3 billion in assistance planned (to Pak) for 2012. Despite deep misgivings, the U.S. does not want to allow Pakistan to become unstable and risk having its nuclear arsenal fall into the hands of Islamic radicals.

Since 2002, Pakistan has received more than $20 billion from the U.S., making the country one of the largest U.S. aid recipients, according to the Congressional Research Service. Nearly $9 billion of that has been in the form of reimbursements for Pakistan's costs to support the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan.

This logic seems plausible only because it is being implemented in reality. Alternatively, let Pakistan become unstable, step in, and destroy all the nuclear weapons. What is wrong in that?
