i used to watch these p3c orion marine recon craft take off and land incessantly on patrol from my office window which was near the moffet field airbase in mountain view, calif. they are singularly unprepossing turboprop aircraft, but obviously highly capable.
there was absolutely no reason for the paks to get them to fight insurgents who -- unlike the LTTE which had small submarines penned in places like phuket, thailand -- are land-based.
obviously the p3cs were intended to fend off india's submarine fleet which had shelled karachi harbor long ago.
well, here's my latest conclusion: it was RAW in the guise of taliban who attacked the pak base, destroying the p3cs, which thereby helps india's interests!

I wouldn't be too hasty in laying blame at India's feet. The Orions have recently been used in military operations in the north of Pakistan:

So it's quote possible that the Pakistani Taliban, who claimed responsibility for the attack, saw benefit in it. Besides, anything that struck at the military's pride would be of benefit to them.
