Kerala has suffered from paucity of local agricultural laborers since long. A dearth of coconut pluckers meant irregular harvesting and poor health and productivity of the trees. Frequent pest infestations, price fluctuations and restrictions on coconut export in the country kept the fortunes of coconut farmers in doldrums. An initiative started by the Coconut Development Board is slowly changing the scenario.
