You don't have to be embarrassed to see him in a conclave with others, unlike those who look like chaprassis or Peter sellers in 'The Party'. @vtpcnk, not necessarily defending shashi, but does it occur to you that there are a number of things quite admirable about white cultural values? for instance, they will honor commitments, honestly tell you 'no' rather than prevaricate, not lie about bad news -- unfortunately, these are not the values indians copy. indians happily copy their drinking, womanizing, and other habits. only. and oh, shashi is considerably smarter than nehru, so i won't cringe when i see him converse with a white. nehru had a big complex about white women in particular, whereas shashi has seen enough of them throw themselves at him that he is not dazzled by them.
@raja, i do harshly criticize my fellow malayalis regularly here. but i have a couple of reasons i support shashi: he *is* a brilliant writer (when he isn't doing political correctness), and i have a personal acquaintance with him. i tend to be loyal to people i know -- so sue me. incidentally, group loyalty is a tenet (along with respect for authority -- see jonathan haidt's work) of right-wing thinking?
Rajeev - thanks for responding! It is none of my business to be commenting on your admiration for Shashi. Yet, I have this question about the "group loyalty" you mentioned in your response to my comment. Which group it is? And is Shashi part of it?
Would the world be a better place without the likes of Shashi Tharoor? Yes, slightly.

Tharoor has long cruised on his looks and his facility with words, but he belongs to the breed who have seriously damaged Hindus post-independence; albeit he shafts them with a smile.
The IPL scandal exposed him for being the money-grubbing crook that he is, and his association with the dynasty points to the ease with which he adjusts his principles in order to avoid traveling in cattle-class.
NaMo did the nation a great service in pointing out that this emperor has no clothes. All the sturm und drang that followed is just a lame and pathetic attempt to change the subject... squirrel for the media dogs (see Pixar's UP). She was his girlfriend at the time she received the 50 crores, and it was clearly a kickback towards Tharoor. What does Modi's wife have to do with it? Did she get a kickback meant for Modi?
