Caste itself is an english word, and there is no equivalent pan-Indian word. To me, caste is plain old-fashioned tribalist behaviour.

caste is originally a portuguese word. there is a similar indian word: jati. that is what matters, not the overarching caste.

jati is now a guild, meant for collective bargaining. and it is very effective in an entitlement economy

Even jati is not used all over India. Again, I think it's the practice which is over-arching, and not the singular terminology, because this practice is carried out around the world, and has merely been accentuated in India, like it has in Africa.

jati is commonly used everywhere in india. people are acutely conscious of their jati, regardless of whether they are hindus or converts to semitic religions. just ask the dalit christians of tamil nadu.

but it is true that jati is practiced everywhere. you just try marrying into one of the aristocratic families of whites in america. you'll not get very far.
