excellent wsj interview with historian on '#vanished #kingdoms': end of #history for #europe; also book review

feb 25th, 2012 CE

here is the interview:

the end is nigh for europe; and possibly for america also shortly, says historian norman davies in this interview.

the author of "vanished kingdoms: the rise and fall of states and nations" suggests that as other powers have risen and fallen, so too will america and europe and russia. here is the book review:

in a way, davies is echoing gibbon "rise and fall of the roman empire" and toynbee in his monumental works on the history of civilizations.

this too will end. all imperialists beware!

(This morning, I was trying to picture the breakup of USA. Disunited States of America...)

Mr. Davies says he'd regret a U.K. breakup, though he's no less convinced it will happen.

"People don't see very often their death coming. . . . Look at the French Revolution: The king of France was thinking in the 1780s, 'We're doing rather better than my father in the 1770s.'" Few saw the end of the Soviet Union coming, either.

you mean the "untied kingdom"? the scots want out, perhaps even the welsh. just like pakistan, it would be a good idea to dismember the "untied kingdom" too. they have done enough damage already.

I was trying to imagine DSA, but I guess there are more possibilities. UK minus Scotland, China minus Tibet and Xinjiang, Pakistan with only West Punjab...
