Avatar अवतार: Two-Stage-to-Orbit Vehicle

India is moving closer to its plans to build a Two-Stage-to-Orbit launch system called AVATAR (Aerobic Vehicle for Hypersonic Aerospace Transportation)

So the developmental path involves testing a hypersonic upper stage boosted to hypersonic speed by a rocket. That's to test the basic principles and gain the necessary data for further development.

But the ultimate goal is to develop a TSTO as shown above, where the lower stage uses hypersonic propulsion, and the upper/forward stage is rocket-powered for final ascent to orbit. Presumably the stage separation would occur just beyond the upper atmosphere, with a mating section (shown in red) being discarded, allowing a more streamlined nose for the hypersonic stage to now glide back to earth.

Calling ISRO's bluff.

ISRO first spoke of a "hyperplane" in 1987 or 1988. It was nonsense. All their announcements are on a grand scale, but they achieve next to nothing. The stuff they send is Russian technology and this is a well known fact.

This project will either not take off or it will be a Russian implementation or ISRO will make it a multinational project and ISRO's contribution will be the logo.

Everyone knows that if you join DRDO or ISRO or any Indian scientific establishment, you retire from the same project that you joined and the projects are always in prototype stage. Being proud is fine, but Indians should not get carried away and let their pride morph into delusions.

Before anyone objects to my comments, please stop and think -- if Indian technology is so great, why does India have to buy its missiles which can be disabled by a foreign country?

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?Which firm do you work for?if u are so annoyed with those tallentless people u should join isro and work to make it a better organisation.isro have developed 3rd largest solid booster, heavy liquid stages, and 200 kn cryostages .Russia had only been supplying the cryostage for gslv which is actually an inefficent one).russia does not use solid fuel for their heavy lifters and nor they have UDMH/N2O4 LIQUID STAGES.
ISROs MIP found water on the moon.ISRO have been selling satellite images for 0.8 cents per m square which forced nasa to reduce rate from 50 cents to 2 cents.these are used by EU,USA,JAPAN ETC.scramjet technology is already tested & the aerodynamic studies are completed the TD will fly this year.and well india uses agni,prithvi,shaurya,k15,PAD AAD and akash THESE ARE INDIAN MISSILES........!!
