Louisiana Symposium on History of Mathematics
(Recent Researches on Indian Mathematics and the Scientific Renaissance)

A Symposium on History of Mathematics, with focus on new findings onIndian mathematics and the Scientific Renaissance, will be held at ULL on October 2, 2004. This Symposium will bring togetherinternationally known scholars who have worked in this field. Since thistopic of history of mathematics has, in recent years, received muchprominence due to its importance for the understanding the ideas thatmade the Scientific Revolution possible. The beginnings of modernmathematics are normally traced to the work of Newton and Leibniz oncalculus and infinite series. But it is now been recognized that originof many infinite series, notably those relating to the arctangent, sineand cosine, is to be found in Kerala, India, two hundred years prior tothe time of Newton. The Kerala mathematicians and astronomers also madefundamental contributions to mathematical astronomy.
The Symposium willpresent research on the period of the Kerala School as well as thelarger subject of Indian mathematics.
It is intended to bring out a proceeding of the Symposium in the form ofa book.
