three by-poll losses and they're already singing obituaries to modi in 2019

a bit premature. and somebody was suggesting this means 'compromise candidate' for a BJP-led coalition will be arun jaitley.

just weeks ago, they were saying if BJP has a brute majority, then yogi could be the new PM in 2019.

all this is just talk.

however, the BJP has to be careful not to piss off its core supporters. even if they do vote, if they don't show enthusiasm, that means the voting % could be quite low (in the 30s and 40s in gorakhpur) and that would spell trouble for the BJP.

Yes, it is a wake up call at least. Better to lose a few bypolls and maybe even a state or two to diffuse some of the anti-incumbency, shake off complacency, and mobilise the core constituency. What happened in 2014 was a mix of complacency, loss of momentum and lack of closing. I would be happy to see a few more such losses before the main contest.
