android lives on to fight apple; samsung-motorola-apple suits bring mixed results

feb 3rd, 2012 CE

from the san jose mercury news:

It’s a mobile world. But it’s also a patent-crazy world. Here’s a roundup of recent developments in the ongoing patent war between Apple and Google‘s Android.

In Germany, Apple reportedly will resume online selling of its popular iPhones and iPads after being forced to stop for a while today because of an injunction won last month by Motorola Mobility. Separately today in that European country, FOSS Patents’ Florian Mueller reports that Motorola — the maker of Android smartphones and more that’s being bought by Google — won a permanent injunction against Apple’s push email service.

Also in Germany earlier this week, Apple lost a bid to ban Samsung from selling a new version of its Galaxy Tab. Earlier this week, a court had upheld a sales ban on an older version of Samsung’s Android-based tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Galaxy Tab 10.1N was redesigned to get around the sales ban.

And finally, in Australia today, Apple has expanded the scope of its patent battle against Samsung, adding 278 claims that cover 22 patents across 10 devices, according to The Next Web.

Meanwhile, in the United States, new numbers show that despite strong iPhone sales during the holidays, Android gained market share among the nation’s 97.9 million smartphone subscribers. Numbers from comScore, which yesterday issued its report for the quarter that ended in December: Android’s market share rose 2.5 percent from the previous quarter to 47.3 percent, iOS rose 2.2 percent to 29.6 percent, RIM fell 2.9 percent to 16 percent, Microsoft fell 0.9 percent to 4.7 percent, and Nokia’s Symbian fell 0.4 percent to 1.4 percent.

where's the outrage? telling that after damning #2g verdict, his MP/minister consorting with hafiz saeed, nobody asks MMS to resign

feb 3rd, 2012 CE

this could mean one of several things:

1. manmohan singh is the teflon man -- nothing sticks to him because of his personal integrity and his scholarship
2. the mainstream media, who usually shout the loudest, are in the pay of the UPA
3. MMS did not know about the 2G scam, as he is not in charge and is only a regent ruling on behalf of others
4. 2G scam and acts like mani shankar aiyar's lovefest with hafiz saeed are what everyone expects from the UPA anyway
5. MMS resigning will not make any difference: another grey appartchik will take his place
6. making MMS resign will simply mean he's made scapegoat while the true culprits are escapegoats
7. those whom MMS acts as a mask for are Those Whose Names Must Not Be Uttered (apologies to rumpole of the bailey), and they would be exposed if MMS resigns, and we can't have that at any cost
8. if MMS resigns, uncle sam will be unhappy and we can't have that
9. if MMS resigns now, that might cause a problem for the UPA in uttar pradesh, and we can't have that
10. thick skin and bluster are expected of all UPA people; they will never willingly leave office. if dismissed, they will try to cling on to the furniture and potted plants, weeping profusely while being carried horizontally out of the building, kicking and screaming, by the watch and ward staff (much like bill clinton was planning to do if impeached). that would be quite an undignified spectacle in these days of the internet and youtube
11. like sachin tendulkar, it is an axiom that MMS can do no wrong. he's after all the 'greatest'
12. any combination of the above

i remember that the media used to scream "vajpayee must resign" even if a mosquito bit digvijay singh (clearly an RSS mosquito).

anyway, where on earth is digvijay singh? haven't seen his pearls of wisdom on 2G

World Narrow Web

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/world-narrow-web/907579/

In a move a few weeks ago, Blogger, Google's blogging service, in effect announced something similar, by saying that default they would redirect Blogger users trying to get to Blogspot.com addresses (like http://example.blogspot.com) to their respective country sites (like http://example.blogspot.in).

Twitter's announcement was greeted with much disapproval by many Twitter users, as a move towards censorship, with some talking (on Twitter) about a boycott. Blogger's move was hidden away, deep within a help page, and is being noticed now, and is causing quite a stir as caving in to censorship.

This is the next wave of INTERNET CENSORSHIP BY THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT. WAKE UP NOW OR THE INTERNET FREEDOM YOU TOOK FOR GRANTED WOULD BE LOST FOREVER.

Cancer and medical tourism | Inquirer Opinion

This is a poorly written article but what's important is the "true
extent" of the Chinese "Medical Tourism". Beware!! However, I was quite
surprised to see some of the Chinese write ups in mainstream high impact
journals. Although, they are doing retrospective studies on huge data
sets but fact of the matter is that it's pretty bad there in the land of
Hans.

http://opinion.inquirer.net/22231/cancer-and-medical-tourism

While health and tourism officials as well as health institutions are
doing their best to promote medical tourism in the Philippines by way of
drawing foreign patients to avail of Filipino medical expertise, Chinese
hospitals are beating them through aggressive advertising right in our
own home ground. This is especially so in the cancer department. But
this is getting ahead of the story.

The third week of January being national Cancer Consciousness Week and
Feb. 4 being World Cancer Day, the Philippine Society of Medical
Oncology (PSMO) recently held a press conference to brief the media on
the national cancer situation and other related issues. PSMO's campaign
theme is "Fighting Cancer: Education, Prevention, Treatment."

Founded in 1969, PSMO is a scientific, professional organization of
medical oncologists (now numbering 146) committed to the advancement of
the science and the ethical and holistic practice of medical oncology.
This means active participation in national programs and campaigns to
promote cancer awareness and safe practices in the field of medical
oncology for optimal patient results.

The national picture is not pretty. Studies from 2008 to 2010 have shown
a steady increase in cancer incidence. PSMO cited Globocan research
estimates that in 2012, new cancer cases (in men and women) will be
roughly 82,460. The top cancer sites in women include breast, cervix,
uterus and lungs, while in men they are lungs, liver, colon/rectum and
prostate.

The good news is that more advocacy groups are spreading cancer
awareness. Said PSMO president Dr. Felycette Gay Lapus, "Every day is
cancer consciousness day for us. We seek to arm the public with as much
information as possible. Prevention is the ultimate goal, but if that
can't be achieved, it is important to get proper and safe treatment as
early as possible."

PSMO vice president Dr. Ellie May Villegas said that earlier detection
and better treatment have resulted in decreased cancer deaths (18
percent) in the United States since the 1990s, reversing decades of
increases. "Hopefully, the Philippines will follow suit," she added.
