A former member of the US Secret Service has published a book with inside perspectives of various US presidents. I find the assessments to be unsurprising - especially about Carter being a jerk.
one sentence in the book review: "Gerald Ford [was] friendly but cheap, often tipping caddies at exclusive country clubs a dollar if anything at all." Compare with a typical Indian politician, say, a CM. He or she will give a few thousands or even a hundred thousand, to a "poor" man, and get publicity in the Indian press for it: for example, Lallu, when he was Bihar CM, was stated to be full of the "milk of human kindness" (the journalist who wrote this must have had a book of quotations at hand). What everyone is oblivious to is the fact that the money never comes from the fake philanthropist's pocket, but from instruments of swindling like CM's discretionary fund, PM's relief fund, etc. -- i.e., effectively from our country's hoi polloi.
