Theresa Gomes and her two daughters climb into a car, their eyes vacant. This is the first time they are leaving their house in seven years.

Frances Gomes was convinced that if his daughters left his flat in Vasai, they would be raped. Or "corrupted". So he kept 27-year-old Barbara and 21-year-old Elizabeth locked up with their mother in this Mumbai suburb.

The three women sit with their heads bowed, but say little. Barbara cannot control her neck movements, the result of a severe beating, one of many, by her father. A visit inside their flat shows a fridge with a chain around it. Gomes decided when his family would eat. The windows have huge deadbolts. When he left the house, he'd slam them shut.

That guaranteed that his neighbours had no interaction with his family. All that was known about Gomes was this: That he was unemployed, and that he lived off the money he'd made from selling a flat.

Then, on Tuesday, whispering through a peephole, Theresa managed to catch the attention of a neighbour. A local NGO arrived soon after to Vasai's House of Horrors.

Francis Gomes was beaten up by angry locals. But his family has not asked for any action against him. "They came to us saying that they wanted the NGO to rehabilitate them. But they did not register a complaint against the accused," says Ashok Pawar, a senior officer at the Manickpur Police Station.

Gomes insists he has done nothing wrong. A slight man with silver hair, he dares, "Bring me face-to-face with my wife and ask her then to explain if I mistreated her." He has this to fall back upon: Two months ago, his third daughter managed to escape with the help of another NGO. Her trauma is so deep that she has never asked those who rescued her to go back for her mother and sisters.

Nun struck Sister Abhaya in head with axe: CBI

Kerala was on Monday shocked to hear the CBI’s revelation in the Sr Abhaya murder case that it was Knanaya Catholic nun Sr Seffi, then 26 years of age, who had struck Sr Abhyaya in her head with an axe before throwing her in the well of the convent at an unearthly hour on March 27, 1992.

The CBI told the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ernakulam that Sr Seffi had struck Abhaya three times in the head at St Pius X Convent, Kottayam before hurling the nun's body in the well behind the convent in the wee hours of the day. Sr Seffi had struck Sr Abhaya with the back of an axe twice behind her right year and a third time right in the top of the head, inside the kitchen of the convent.

The investigating team of the CBI said in the court that with the strike in the top of the head, Sr Abhaya had gone unconscious. The investigators explained the brutality of the act of Sr Seffi, now 42, and her companions towards a younger co-nun by saying the perpetrators of the crime had left the spot only after ensuring that Sr Abhaya was dead in the well. Sr Seffi was presently the third accused in the case in which Knanaya Church's senior priests Fr Thomas M Kottoor (59) and Fr Jose Puthrukayil (56) are first and second accused respectively.

But when she got there, Mehanaz strangled her with a towel while Gulnaz held her legs and her minor sister clamped her mouth shut. A PTI report quoted investigating officer Hinduram Patil as saying: “Khan peeled off the skin from her face and cut her nose so no one could identify the body if recovered.”

Defence lawyer Wahab Khan. said the case wasn’t rarest of rare as cause of death was strangulation and the body was cut only with intention to destroy evidence. He also argued that the Khans had “committed murder only to set an example for their other daughters, so they didn’t follow in their sister’s footsteps”. "

Women empowerment, like social justice, has been a pet theme for the politicians, but both have not been achieved even after sixty years of independence. The main reason for this failure is the whimsical and cynical way by which the politicians handle these two issues, only to accomplish their self interests instead of true national interests. The Congressmen, Marxists, Dravidians and other P-Sec parties vie with each other in this regard, which results in utter chaos not serving the purpose.

The state of Kerala, which has been ruled alternatively by the Congress and Communists, constituted the 'Kerala Womens Commission' in the year 1996, as per the Section 5 of Kerala Women's commission Act 1990 vide GO (P) No. 9/96/SWD dated 14-03-06 with a Chairperson and six members, in order to improve the status of women and inquire into the unfair practices affecting them. The present Commission headed by Justice Sreedevi looked into the Church's practice of appointing 'Nuns' and the issues affecting them, as per the direction of the present CPM led LDF government.

The Churches in Kerala have a practice of appointing even minor girls as 'Nuns' and there is a feeling among the Christian community that the nuns are not properly taken care of by the institutions. Cases relating to physical and psychological abuse of nuns and usurping of their properties have been widely reported in the media every now and then and the 'Sister Abaya' case is an apposite example of such an ugly practice going on in Kerala.

After making an in-depth study on the issue, Justice Sridevi Commission came up with a recommendation that restrictions have to be made in the process of enrolment of nuns by Churches. It has suggested the government to enact a Law to prescribe an age limit for appointment of nuns, so that, legal actions could be taken against those parents, who send their minor girls to Churches for becoming nuns. The Commission has also asked the government to formulate measures for the rehabilitation of the nuns who return from the Churches and Convents after relinquishing their nun-hood due to the ill treatment meted out to them by the Churches and other institutions. The commission was critical of the fact that the Churches, which take over the properties of the girls who get appointed as nuns, do not have the habit of giving them back to the ladies when they relinquish nun-hood for some reason or the other, leaving them in lurch with no means for livelihood.

The Saudi punishment of the rape victim is too recent to require repetition, but here's an interesting parallel in the treatment of rape victims by christist believers that confirms that the difference between Christian and Mohammedan is only a matter of degree of Semitic indoctrination.

In the latest incident, apparently doctors in Chile are refusing to provide emergency contraceptives to victims of rape on the grounds that it would be contrary to their religious beliefs!! Their stance has gained traction since Pope Benedict aka Ratzy's fatwa to that effect. Ratzy is male, but I'm sure the Ghoul of Calcutta would have approved.

Now, lest the Mormons, Baptists etc claim that its a Catholic thing - this is actually widespread across all christist denominations. Apparently, it is legal for doctors/pharmacists to do this in several states across the US and also in predominantly Anglican Britain.
