rajeev in DNA on the sad events around shashi tharoor

apr 21st, 2010

the headline is not mine -- you know the copy editor gets to write the headline.

i believe shashi was done in by others who framed and smeared him; but i think this is just a temporary setback and that he will rise again, his name cleared and his honor retrieved. i have always said, and still say, that shashi would make a great president for india -- far  more dignified than most presidents, with the possible exceptions of s radhakrishnan and apj abdul kalam. imagine, an author and intellectual in the presidential palace!

but i do hope shashi will stay away from cricket, the bane and the opiate of the masses.

Your defense of Shashi Tharoor is baffling. Of course congress is corrupt to the core, but this guy was way too blatant.

25% sweat equity for what? It is more like a sweet heart deal. I personally think this guy was given Congress ticker for his 'services' during his stint at the UN. Remember the Natwar scam?

Here is a counter point to your POV.

"It would, however, be churlish to deny Mr Tharoor the right to defend himself and clear his name; others with a far lower integrity quotient have been given that opportunity. After all, as he has eloquently pointed out in his statement in the Lok Sabha, he has “a long record of public service unblemished by the slightest tint of financial irregularity”. That he served the UN under Mr Kofi Annan, who will be remembered as a Secretary-General who fetched immense disrepute to the organisation and whose son was found to have benefited from UN contracts, is inconsequential. Although it could be asked as to whether his conscience troubled him every time media reported about Mr Annan’s, or his son Kojo’s, dubious deeds. Of course, the perks of office can have a numbing effect on the conscience of the most honest person, as can the loaves and fishes of office."

Rajeev,
You always have a soft corner for Shashi! It is obvious why. ANyways, it is your personal view. But Shashi, being so highly educated and intelligent, does not hesitate licking Sonia's boots! Have you read one of his obsequious articles praising her sky high? Disgusting! He has not done anything that merits praise after he became a minister other than grabbing headlines for all the wrong reasons.....

hello m patil, i understand that you feel the sweat equity bit was particularly blatant. but that it is precisely the point -- why would shashi do something so idiotic and blatant? that would either suggest he was suffering from megalomania or that he is actually being framed.

yes, i did read what kanchan had to say and he does make sense. but i also don't understand what the BJP got out of tharoor's exit. why aren't they focusing their fire on the real villains who have hurt them? has anything been accomplished other than a fleeting tamasha?

@Nizhal Yoddha

why would shashi do something so idiotic and blatant?

Maybe you give him too much credit for being smart. Just because he was stupid does not make it obviously right.

you can only be framed when there is something to frame you with - which in this case the man did not even deny. Why did a lady no one ever heard of get 'sweat equity' - makes you wonder what sweat she put in.

the fact is the man was caught with his had in the cookie jar. sexual jealousy and kkkangress culture had nothing to do with it

incidentally - paul wolfie did something similar at the world bank. i dont remember you talking about how smart and dynamic wolfie was. different man - different standard

megalomania and stupidity are good reasons. tharoor actually ran for the un gen sec post like he was running for the post of the president of the us. he gave campaign speeches and a concession speech. should tell you what an idiot he is.

another possible reason for his actions -- corruption in india *is* blatant. he was just doing the normal thing. as was the shady lady who used a minister to broker a deal. i doubt she will marry him. marriage for her would not be "business as usual."

tharoor is a dyed in the wool p-sec and deserves no sympathy. i would not call him an intellectual either. he seriously thinks that foreign service and bureaucracy are the most important things in this world. if all diplomats were dismissed and the foreign ministry was handed over to lower division clerks, it would not make any difference. same with the un. there would be no impact on the world if that organization was shut down.

Shashi Tharoor, has been given more credit for his intelligence and smartness than he actually deserves. This guy would have been a summary disaster as the UN Chief. Thank god for small mercies. He takes the Indian public for granted and hence keeps chanting that he did not receive a single paisa for mentoring the Kochi IPL bidders. It is another matter his girlfriend got the sweat equity which would eventually belong to Shashi once he marries her. I guess, the mentoring that Shashi got under Coffee Annan, doing the oil for food and other assorted scams has really come in handly in swining the IPL Kochi deal. Add to this that Shashi was also the part of the team that received the nobel peace prize along with Coffee Annan makes me puke. This after authroizing dubya to bomb Iraq to stone age.

Tharoor cannot be totally innocent as he claims. He must have forsaken his integrity just like all the other corrupt politicians that we have. He wasnt smart enough to cover his tracks like the other wily ones.
