No doubt, it was Veer Savarkar who coined the term "First war of Independence" for the 1857 rebellion. But, even though Hindus were inspired by a nationalistic fervour to throw off the yoke of colonial rule, the Mohammedans were clearly motivated by a goal of re-establishing Islamic rule in India. Remember that the Mughals had largely been contained in Northern India by the Marathas and the Sikhs, when the British imperialists started expanding westwards from Bengal. The Mohammedans saw it as a Jihad, NOT as a freedom movement. A Wahabbi mullah, Shah Waliullah famously invited fellow Mohammedans from Afghanistan to invade India and re-establish the Shariat and commanded Muslim Indians to massacre their Hindu compatriots if they failed to cooperate in the Islamic Jihad. Devendra Swarup contends that the Islamist fervour of 1857 laid the foundation for the partition of 1947. Mohammedan conquest of India
started in the 8th century, CE with Mohammad Bin Qasim conquering Sindh. To me, therefore, the "first war of independence" was waged by the Hindu resistance against Islamic invasions, starting with Raja Dahir of Sindh, almost 1100 years before 1857. Veer Savarkar himself revised his position on this matter later on in his lifetime.
Not to belittle the martyrs and freedom fighters who made the supreme sacrifice for the cherished goal of establishing Hindu Swaraj in Bharat, but the 1857 revolt was neither well planned nor executed. Hindu warriors getting martyred to re-establish Mughal/Mohammedan rule in Delhi clearly could not have been their ultimate goal!!! That stinks of a perverse, sadistic Gandhian dhimmitude like the infamous "Lucknow pact" and the "Khilafat movement" karyakarta92https://www.blogger.com/profile/12848906033912207523noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7813749.post-46002763078410086152007-12-13T01:00:00.000+05:302007-12-13T01:00:00.000+05:30Is there supposed to be a picture in this story?
