Afghan Sikhs feel abandoned, ponder their future

sep 30th, 2007

is manmohan singh losing sleep over the afghan sikhs' plight?

i doubt it. he has no cause except: dhimmitude, sycophancy, strange love of nuclear deal.

and how does a group of 100,000 get reduced to 2,000 in 10 years? answers: a) murder, b) forced conversion, c) ethnic cleansing.

but if the number of refugee aghan sikhs/hindus in india is only 9,000, what happened to the other 89,000? obviously they have been liquidated. isn't this a genocide? who's protesting, though?

and this character sood below, see his dismissive attitude? now if it had been some mohammedan under pressure anywhere, he would have jumped through hoops. we saw this in the story of how the indian government was falling all over itself to get a release for that shabeel (or whatever -- how easily we forget!) -- i mean that doctor in australia who was, i presume, a good terrorist (ie. one focusing on killing not indians but other people).

Note: I am sorry but when Muslims are majority and in control -- this is the net result. Kuffars have no right to existence according to Islam. Minorities are simply extinguished -- be it Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and the process continues in Kashmir today.   Afghan Sikhs and Hindus are indigenuous to Afghanistan, since prior to the barbaric Muslim invaders -- Afganistan was 100% Hindu/Buddhist ! And today???  see below

**There were an estimated one lakh Afghan Sikhs and Hindus till a decade or more ago but their number has dwindled dramatically. Today, their population is expected to be not more than 2,000. **

Afghan Sikhs feel abandoned, ponder their future
http://www.asianage.com/presentation/leftnavigation/news/india/afghan-sikhs-feel-abandoned,-ponder-their-future.aspx

By RAMESH RAMACHANDRAN
Kabul, Sept. 28: Angry Afghan Sikhs marched down the streets of Kabul a week ago after locals prevented them from cremating a community elder. Tension was resolved after the police chief intervened but the embers have not died down completely.

Mr Autaar Singh, one of only two representatives from the Afghan Sikh community in Parliament, cannot understand the opposition to cremation as per Sikh rites.

He wonders why anyone should want to dissuade them, when even the Taliban did not see it as a sacrilege and stop the practice.

Mr Amrik Singh, a small trader who peddles his wares near a gurdwara in Kabul, in turn, feels the minuscule Afghan Sikh community is still trying to come to terms with the downturn in relations with the majority population. Their womenfolk live in perpetual fear.
Children cannot attend school regularly. Families are beset by financial worries.

He is certain that if the situation deteriorates, the only option of the community will be to migrate to India, the spiritual homeland of the Sikhs. What is not certain is whether they can afford to pay for the journey.

The ambassador of India to Afghanistan, Mr Rakesh Sood, says the government of India is seized of the matter but there is only so much it can do. "We cannot support migration of people to India merely because they share a faith with us," he said in an interview to this newspaper. "India," he hastens to add, "does not support financially in any case."

Mr Sood explains: "First of all you must understand that these are not people of Indian origin. These are Afghan Hindus and Afghan Sikhs who've been here for centuries. So I mean this is not going back. It's not as if it's not like you know you had Indian labour that migrated to Mauritius maybe even two centuries ago and therefore wants to go back [but] they've always been here. They are Afghans. So it is not a question of going back [to India.] If they want to migrate they can migrate ... that's a different matter."

Mr Sood dismisses turf war between the ministry of external affairs and the ministry of overseas Indian affairs. "We have the ministry of overseas Indian affairs [which] looks at problems of overseas Indians ... like Indian labour going to Gulf ... that is whole different ballgame but here it is a question of these people who are Afghans finding their rightful place in Afghanistan," he says.

The ambassador points out that Afghan President Hamid Karzai is extremely conscious of the need to keep the Afghan Sikh and Hindu community in his country and not allow them to leave. "He is very sensitive to this. One reason of course is that he speaks Hindi and has studied in India and therefore, he always holds India's multi-ethnicity as something which is an important asset and a requirement in democracy," he says.

Mr Sood feels that the Sikh community could be offered an alternative land for cremation in order to resolve the issue.

The genesis of the dispute, according to him, can be traced back to 60-odd years ago when a community elder, who was a diwan in the king's rule, received land as gift. He decided to give a part of that land for a dharamsala (as temples and gurdwaras are known in Afghanistan). The community never put up a boundary wall around it although the inner complex has one. The land near the inner complex was used for cremation.

"What has happened is there is pressure on land after 2002. That land is now being encroached upon or occupied by Afghans ... nobody seems to have a title to it, so when they took body for cremation recently the locals objected [saying it was] unhygienic," Mr

Sood says. "I do not foresee any difficulty in terms of their either getting an alternative site or because ... I doubt ... if the dharamsala does not have a clear title to this piece of land which is now encroached upon or occupied, then they'll probably get an alternative piece of land [for] cremation which they can then enclose and use it."

There were an estimated one lakh Afghan Sikhs and Hindus till a decade or more ago but their number has dwindled dramatically. Today, their population is expected to be not more than 2,000.

Ironically, there are more Indians in Afghanistan today than Afghan Sikhs and Hindus. About 4,000-odd Indians are engaged in the reconstruction of the war-torn country. There are over 9,000 Afghan refugees in India under the mandate of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. An overwhelming majority of them are Sikhs and Hindus.

high court on Rama Setu: "Don't play with fire"

anybody declaring a bandh should be fined rs. 20 lakh

"Don't play with fire"

The judgement of the Hon'ble Supreme Court delivered in an
extraordinary open hearing of the Court on a Sunday on 30 September
2007 is historic and constitutes a watershed in constitutional
governance in India. The hearing was on petitions questioning the
constitutionally of the Tamilnadu bandh declared for 1 October 2007 by
a group of parties who are partners in both the Central Government and
the Government of Tamilnadu. It is strange that the governments which
are entrusted with the security of the land should themselves be
indulging in internal pressure tactics through declaration of a bandh
which adversely impacts the civil society, the samajam.

The Setusamudram channal project as an unstable structure, itself is
in dispute in the Supreme Court since it has the effect of
desiccationg a World Heritage, the Rama Setu apart from serious
national security implications and good relations between neighbouring
nations.

When a suggestion was made for out-of-court parleys, the Court shot
back: "Don't play with fire." These words of wisdom should echo in
every entity of civil governance, governed by the rule of law. The
bandh was declared allegedly to put pressure on the Central Government
to implement the Setusamudram channel project desiccating the world
heriage, Rama Setu – a desiccation which will have devastating
implications on national sovereignty, security, accumulation of
nation's wealth in placer deposits, impairment of tsunami protection
measures. The project is ill-conceived and in haste without consulting
and involving Geological Survey of India (GSI) and without taking the
neighbouring country Srilanka into confidence and without responding
to the concerns raised by 34 Srilankan environmental experts pointing
to the possibility of freshwater supplies drying up in Jaffna and
Rameshwaram. If GSI had been consulted, they would have pointed out the
geothermal situation, presence of volcanic rocks and the possibility
of project work triggering min-tsunamis and with serious consequences
impacting adversely the fragile ecosystem of the 24 marine parks which
have been deemed to be a South Asia biosphere.

The Government of India should raise above party considerations and
pro-american yen and shelve the Setusamudram channel project and order
fresh, denovo review of the rationale and
economic-environmental-oceanographic-navigational-law of the sea
aspects of the project while avoiding the creation of an International
Waters Boundary in violation of the June 1974 Sirimavo
Bandaranaike-Indira Gandhi declaration of Gulf of Mannar and Palk
Straits as Historic Waters as a commonwealth shared by the two
nations.

Rama Setu: Mareecha's advice to Karunanidhi

sept 30th, 2007

maybe that maricha was smarter than i thought.

i have to withdraw my statement that maricha was a minor villain/magician and comparing him to jesus (who is as mythical as maricha and good at magic tricks). it's unfair to maricha.

have to think of another minor villain in the ramayana who has magician powers. actually any of the rakshasas would do, because they all were good magicians. maybe i'll borrow someone from the mahabharata, maybe ghatotkacha? no, he was a mighty warrior, we need someone truly minor.

kanchan gupta: Aiiya, abusing Ram is passe

Aiyya, berating Ram is passé

The intemperate outburst of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi against Sri Ram and the Ramayan tradition has left many questions unanswered. For instance, whom was the DMK's paterfamilias addressing while pouring scorn and abuse on an icon of Hindu reverence? Was he pandering to 'Dravidian' sentiments? Was he sending out a not-so-subtle vote-for-DMK message to Tamil Nadu's radical Islamists who believe the pearly gates swing open even before suicide bombers knock on them? Was he striking out in blind fury over the economic consequences of a pet project gone awry? Or, is it simply that Mr Karunanidhi is caught in a time-warp and believes that little has changed in Tamil Nadu since the day when 'Periyar' EV Ramaswami Naicker led a procession in Dharmapuri, carrying Sri Ram's portrait garlanded with slippers and then made a great show of destroying it amid loud applause?

Between the 1950s, when 'Periyar' stunned Tamil Nadu's Brahmin elite as well as those who were resentful of an exclusivist social hierarchy by declaring, "There is no god. There is no god. There is no god at all. He who propagates god is a scoundrel. He who worships god is a barbarian," and 2007, both society and politics in this State have undergone a sea change. For evidence, look at ADMK leader J Jayalalithaa's bold and public denunciation of Mr Karunanidhi's rant because it "hurts Hindu sentiments". An astute politician who has learned the art of Dravidian politics from none less than MG Ramachandran, Ms Jayalalithaa was not referring to sensitivities in India's cowbelt but within Tamil Nadu where Periyar's godless rationalism has been largely supplanted by popular Hinduism which manifests itself so vividly in idol worship and spiritual discourse at Karumari Amman temples as well as shrines dedicated to local gods and goddesses. Having burned her fingers over the Shankaracharya fiasco, she should know that Hindu-baiting does not pay in today's Tamil Nadu. Mr Karunanidhi, a veteran politician with far greater experience than the celebrated resident of Poes Garden, should know this too. But Kalaignar appears to have cocooned himself from the real world.

What is amazing is the authority with which he rubbished the Ramayan tradition and disputed the historicity of Sri Ram. It would seem that he had come to his conclusions and penned his script after an indepth study of Hindu scriptures. But this is far from the truth. In Cutouts, Caste and Cine Stars: The World of Tamil Politics, a delightful book shorn of pretentious academic gobbledygook by reputed journalist Vaasanthi, there is a revealing passage attributed to RM Veerappan, who produced several boxoffice hits starring MGR. Recalling the Dravidian movement inspired by 'Periyar', Veerappan tells her, "Neither Periyar nor the others in the Dravidian movement knew what the Vedas said… It was generally felt that Sanskrit, which was neither a Dravidian language nor a language spoken anywhere, was still holding sway over the Brahminical Hindu religion. Nobody in the movement was well-versed in the epics either. But the epics had to be banished because the Brahmins revered them. Somebody pointed out to Periyar, 'Aiyya,   the fellow who narrated the Gita was a cowherd. The fellow who heard it was a Kshatriya. The fellow who wrote the whole thing was a shepherd. Where is the Brahmin in it?' Aiyya said, 'I am not speaking to intellectuals like you. I am speaking to the masses who believe in myths spread by Brahmins'." That would explain EV Ramaswami Naicker's astoundingly scurrilous yet, in his time, hugely acclaimed The Ramayana: A True Reading published in 1959.

For all his 'rationalist' thunder, Periyar, it needs to be said, was not necessarily a man of either courage or conviction. He was careful enough to limit his criticism of faith to undiluted abuse of Hinduism and its rituals — he did not utter a word against Christianity and Islam, though both religions are anchored in faith; Mr Karunanidhi exercises the same caution. As for conviction, 'Periyar', who took to preaching socialism in the 1930s and was imprisoned for his Bolshy views, promptly denounced the Revolution rather than have his prison term extended. Later, responding to critics, he grandly declared that he had much more to do than "going to prison and becoming a martyr". The Congress embraced him only to realise its folly; Periyar launched his 'Self Respect Movement' and joined the Justice Party whose name he changed to Dravidar Kazhagam (Party of the Dravidians). By all accounts a tyrant who had no patience for parliamentary democracy, his starry-eyed followers dumped him, or so the story goes, after he married a young woman. Thus was the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, or DMK, led by CN Annadurai born. "Periyar came to break and he has done it and it is for us to build anew," Annadurai told his followers, among them Mr Karunanidhi.

The subsequent split and the launching of the ADMK by MGR is history, as is the marginalisation of the Congress in Tamil Nadu politics after its defeat in 1967. From being a 'two-and-a-half-party' State, Tamil Nadu has witnessed the emergence of two dominant parties which retained power between themselves till their overwhelming dominance was weakened by the emergence of smaller, caste-based parties like the PMK and the MDMK. The tectonic shift in Tamil Nadu's politics is signalled by the arrival of coalitions led by the ADMK and the DMK; neither can win a poll on its own any longer. Dravidianism's decline — noted Tamil scholar Karthigesu Sivathamby says "it floundered when it rejected religion as a whole... religion has a social necessity" — was accompanied by the ascent of fragmentary mobilisation based on caste identities. While the middle social groups may have prospered on account of Dravidian politics, the lower groups have stagnated; quotas have not fetched uniform benefits; and, with economic liberalisation creating jobs and employment opportunities irrespective of caste identities, Government is no longer seen as the sole benefactor. Prosperity has brought pride among those who felt aggrieved during the heyday of Dravidianism. It's unlikely today's Tamil Nadu will riot over Hindi or endorse separatism. Self-immolation as a declaration of political loyalty has made way for hooliganism fashioned after north India's muscle-power politics.

Mr Karunanidhi appears to be blissfully ignorant of these realities as he tries to resurrect the ghost of 'Periyar' and re-enact the public humiliation of Sri Ram, forgetting that till the parting of ways in 2004, the DMK was an ally of the BJP and was not particularly discomfited by the idea of Sri Ram which is central to the idea of India.

mohammedans on orkut enticing women for demographic warfare purposes

sept 29th, 2007

habc had posted this news report:

http://www.indianexpress.com/story/220887.html

very interesting.

these mohammedan youngsters are working for ibm, intel etc. and spending their time on orkut sending mails to women attempting to convert them. also, they are common, garden variety mohammedans, who studied at TKM engineering college in kollam, a standard middle-class college which has been around for some time. TKM = tangal kunju musaliar, so this is the kind of mohammedan-owned 'minority' professional college where 90% of the seats are at the disposal of the management, meaning they go to the mohammedans or christists.

there must be 'targets' and 'incentives' for the mohammedans to convert women. see, one hindu woman converted means -2 future hindus and +6 future mohammedans. this is a standard tactic they are using in the UK as well, with 'students' hanging out and trying to seduce non-mohammedan women college students.

this sort of entrapment is a fallout of the 'secular' system which continually devalues hinduism and projects dhimmitude. it is evident to anyone that hindus have no rights and mohammedans and christists have excessive, unfair rights -- so it is easy to convince women, even given the lovely 'barefoot, pregnant, in the kitchen, raped by fathers-in-law' status of women in mohammedanism.

there is a place in ponnani, kerala (a mohammedan center) where it was reported a few months ago that there are about a hundred hindu and christist women who were seduced by mohammedan boys, 'married', converted and then abandoned. they are too embarrassed to go back to their families.

look at the story: it is from the point of view of the mohammedan youngster's father, saying how sad he is. i am surprised that manmohan singh didn't lose sleep over this yusuf's problems.

no comment from the hindu woman, or her husband. their opinions don't matter, only mohammedans' opinions do.

The actual - i.e. dismal financial projections underlying the Sethusamudram Canal - T R Baalu needs a root canal on his brain.

John Jacob's study (perhaps he is a Hindu fundamentalist as well) has also been cited by Subramanian Swamy. Have you ever seen an ELM reporter / op-ed writer talk about those financial projections? That is a favorite technique of the ELM - to posit the "economic development" aspect of a given against which they will tell you about the "shrill cry" of the revanchist's. Well - so much for the economics - or the DMK-nomics! it's all about dredging contracts - not just for the one-off work but for life!

"You leave us alone, don't divide our people"
An open letter to Sonia Gandhi
http://indiaview.wordpress.com
By Anwar Manippady

COURTESY: Organiser Weekly

It is not possible for you to know the pulse of
Indians as we belong to a great heritage and culture.
You are taking advantage of our people's innocence and
goodness. You have been trying to shatter our
country's peace and destroy the great heritage passed
down to us from generations. It's time you restrain
yourself from committing such crimes against Indians.

Madam Soniaji!

You are worsening the plight of minorities of this
country – India, to which you do not belong. It is not
possible for you to know the pulse of Indians as we
belong to a great heritage and culture. You are taking
advantage of our people's innocence and goodness. You
have been trying to shatter our country's peace and
destroy the great heritage passed down to us from
generations. It's time you restrain yourself from
committing such crimes against Indians. You have been
leading a National Party not because of the merits you
have, but because the members of your party are
gullible, ignorant and are not able to unite together!
The vote bank policy practiced by you and your
Congress party is further deteriorating the
relationship between the majorities and minorities of
this country. Here are some instances.Sometime ago,
while Sania Mirza was donning the Indian colours and
bringing laurels to the country, your support to a
group of clergy in their fatwa against Sania was
uncalled for. You said that it was a personal matter,
and their sentiments should not be hurt and it should
be respected. There is no such fatwa in this country
and instead of quelling this then and there; your
support set a very bad precedent.

The appeasement through the reservation policy based
on caste, creed and religion is further breaking the
society by division and groupism. The same reservation
policy could be implemented on the basis of the
economic backwardness whereby the branding of the
people on these lines can be avoided. Of course you
couldn't have created a vote bank there!

Recently when some fanatic hooligans attacked novelist
Tasleema Nasreen, you and your Party did not utter a
word to condemn the incident. Your protégé Y.Samuel
Rajashekar Reddy did not get the hooligans booked
under proper criminal charges. They had the courage to
threaten the author of beheading her and the Andhra
Pradesh Government watched this in silence instead of
punishing the culprits.

Your head of the Government came out with the
statement before the investigation ended with regard
to the fanatic terrorists involved in the UK bomb
blast, saying that 'One felt sorry for the relatives
of such terrorists'. Why do you do this? Is it not
trying to please the ignorant minorities for sake of
vote bank? Madam, Please stop these appeasements. It
is not going to help the minorities. Its detrimental
to the minorities, detrimental to the country.

These appeasements develop a false strength with the
minorities, which in turn will tend to undo the
goodness their religion preaches. All these above
actions will not build our country India into a
modern, developed and a powerful nation.

It also reminds me of the novel Lajja by Smt. Tasleema
Nazreen, wherein a Hindu family dedicated to the
country Bangladesh was subjected to discrimination,
brutality and even rape. And finally that family had
to run away from their motherland – Bangladesh. Your
appeasement will make the minorities of this country,
homeless too, for no fault of theirs or the
majorities.

Like the old saying 'From the frying pan to the fire';
your new venture, destroying the Ram Sethu will be
another worst crime against the country. The whole
world knows that Ram Sethu has a religious connotation
and we Indians are emotionally attached to it. The
dredging and opening of Ram Sethu will have far
reaching consequences in India. Moreover;

1) It is not beneficial in any way:
a) Any ship weighing 40,000 tons and above cannot sail
through this pass as most of the ships carry much more
weight at present.
b) It is exorbitantly costly to make this pass.
c) The time gained by passing through this pass
instead of going around Srilanka is two hours.
d) The ships passing through this channel requires
pilotage and pilotage charges which will be heavy. For
example the channel length of this pass is about 56 Km
and the pilotage charges will be around Rs one lakh
per Km.
e) Dredging the pass and removing the sand will be a
permanent feature and it's not going to be cost
effective. On the whole, it will not be economically
viable for the shipping companies or beneficial for
the country.

2) How detrimental it is:
a) It will hurt sentiments of millions of Indians.
b) Priceless Thorium deposits will be washed away by
breaking the wall.
c) More than ten lakh fishermen will lose their jobs.
d) If the pass becomes an International route, it is a
threat to our internal security.
e) It will destroy the fragile coral islands, as the
sediment from the turbulent tides will enter from the
Bay of Bengal.
f) It might reactivate the sub sea heat flows.
g) Ram Sethu is a natural tsunami protection wall. It
proved during last tsunami, as Kerala was not
affected. This fact has a scientific bearing.

Let us take a look at the opinions we have from
different quarters of the society and various
scientists and thinkers:
a) NASA and Google Earth photographs and other
information
b) Department of Earth Sciences, Government of India.
March 2007.
c) Sir.A.R. Mudaliar Report 1956.

All the above evidences show that Ram Sethu is not a
naturally-developed formation, but it's a man-made
bund. The meaning of the word "Sethu" in all the
Indian languages is "Man-made bund". Sir A.R. Mudaliar
Committee Report very clearly says that breaking of
Ram Sethu is not feasible as it would entail definite
navigational hazard and shifting sandbanks in this
area presents a far more formidable problem both at
the stage of construction and during maintenance
level.

Professor Tad S. Murthy , A Tsunami expert says Ram
Sethu is needed to change the mouth of the alignment
of the Bay of Bengal. This will help in avoiding
destruction of Kerala if there's a recurrence of
another tsunami.

Besides ISRO and NASA there are other evidences which
shows the existence of Ram Sethu. They are as follows:

Arya Chakravarti coins of Jaffna of 13th century and
Parantaka Chola a copper plate of 10th century
indicate that king Aparajithavarman went to
Setuthirtha. That is Rama's temple at the Sethu.

Evidence from Sangam literature: In a book titled
Ramanatha-puram, a district gazetteer published in
1972 refers to Ram Sethu also as Adam's Bridge or Nala
Setu.

Malabar Bowen Map of 1747 drawn by Netherlands shows
Ramar Coil (Rama Temple).

Maps drawn by Joseph Parks, an Australian Botanical
explorer (1788) shows Ramar Bridge. (map in Saraswathi
Mahal Lib., Thanjavur).

Islamic Expansion and western view of South Asia, 7th
to 12th century (Al- Biruni's record) by a legendry
Arab explorer and geographer proves the presence of
Ram Sethu.
Madras Presidency Admission Reports of 1903 and a
travelogue of 1744 call the bridge of Rama : It really
joined Ceylon to

India until 1480, until a breach was made through
rocks during a storm. A subsequent storm enlarged this
breach and thus the foot traffic ceased. A book by
Alexander Hamilton, 1744 New account of the East
Indies: gives an exact and copious description of the
situation, wherein page 338 describes his visit to
'Zeloan' (Alternative spelling for Ceylon) by walking
on the bridge. Authentic digital images of Sri Ram
Sethu from NASA image exchange: Photographs taken by
NASA astronauts, Russian cosmonauts, Gemini Spacecraft
in 1966, 8 NASA Space Shuttle Missions 1983 to 1994.
International Space Station expedition 2002-2005, all
conclude Ancient Bridge = Sri Ram Sethu and appreciate
the Sethu in following words: Sri Ram Sethu causeway
must have been a major engineering feat for its thin
trace is still so clearly visible on the present days
satellite images. It has resisted the relentless
erosion of the sea for millions of years and it
attests to the great engineering skills of the ancient
Indian people. It is the earliest and largest
carbon-fibre reinforced civil engineering structure
known to man and should be protected as a world
heritage site.

Justice K.T. Thomas and our former President Dr A.P.J.
Abdul Kalam observations say that the Sethu is a
heritage site and has a religious leaning. All the
above scientific derivations, historical evidences and
observations of scientists and learned persons and the
feeling of millions of people of all communities if
set aside and the Ram Sethu is destroyed, our country
will go through insurmountable spiritual and economic
loss. When Metro Rail tracks in Delhi can be replanned
because of the worry that it might cause vibration to
the natural heritage the Kutub Minar; the highways
gets diverted when monuments like dargahs, temples and
churches comes in the way, then why can't to have
absolute peace, and to avoid chaotic situations above
all in the interest of this great country the breaking
of Ram Sethu be dropped. On the other hand the
development of Ram Sethu as a heritage place, a
pilgrim center and as a tourist spot should be
envisaged which will not only bring huge revenue to
the exchequer but peace to people of India too.

see how poor the 'poor minorities' are.

this study is by the communists, so nobody can object to its 'scientific' 'rational' perspective. (i say that tongue firmly in cheek, given that the communists, like the 'dravidians' are anything *but* scientific and rational, given their touching belief in fairy tales about their gods 'dialectical materialsm' and 'EVR naicker'.

and we still give all these 'minority' benefits to christists and mohammedans!

guess how christists on average ended up owning 2x the amount of land hindus have. that's right, they just stole it by grabbing land all over the place.

This is the result  when Marxists, Muslims and Missionaries come together. They strangle Hindus and Hinduism. I hope our brothers and sisters in othe states realize this when their politicans  pander to minority sentiments.

In Kerala, Hindus need help
16 Dec 2006, 2320 hrs IST ,Ananthakrishnan G , TNN

NEW DELHI: As the committee under retired judge Rajender Sachchar was busy culling out figures of Muslim deprivation, a more generic exercise was being carried out in Kerala by an influential socio-scientific organisation — and with dramatically different results.

Results of the survey titled 'Kerala: How It Lives, How It Thinks' are enough to shatter traditional postulations and shows that it isn't minority Muslims or Christians, but Hindus comprising 54.47% of the state's estimated 3.2 crore population who are at the economic downside.

But hold on. The study is not the handiwork of any radical right wing group, but the Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishad whose Marxist antecedents are well known.

Hindus, according to numbers compiled by it, constitute the major chunk of the state's poor with an astounding 39.3 lakh living below the poverty line.

Muslims follow with 24.7 lakh and Christians, 8.2 lakh. Though Muslims lead the poverty index on a religion-wise breakup, the difference with Hindus is a marginal 5.9%.

The majority community also trails in land holdings. While a privileged Hindu family owns only an average of 0.69 acres, a Muslim family owns 0.77 acre and a Christian family, 1.264 acre.

The report published in September this year says only 80.1% of Hindu houses are in a livable condition, less than that of Muslims ( 89.7%) and Christians (83.6%).

Also only 90.4% Hindu homes have a toilet as against 93.8% Muslim and 94% Christian homes. In 18.75% Hindu dwellings, the water is not safe compared to only 11.55% Muslim homes and 15% Christian.

The minority communities are also ahead in electrification of houses and access to pipe water. Also, 14.5% Hindu houses are in danger of water log-ging suggesting they are not located uptown. Corresponding figures for Muslims and Christians are 12.8% and 10.9% respectively.

One reason for the better showing by Muslims could be the large Gulf remittance, says Parishad vice president K P Aravindan, who edited the report.

As the results show, 34.5% Muslim families have Gulf income against 11.61% Christian and 10.4% Hindu. The Christian community, however, leaves others far behind on most economic indicators.

Even in matter of dowry, Christians lead the tally with 80% families following it. Muslims tag along at 76%. Though less, Hindus too are yet to rid themselves of the social evil with 52% still under its grip.

Christians also top the per capita income chart at Rs 21,897 followed by Hindus Rs 17,762 and Muslims Rs 17,538. Statistics on unemployment also throw up some interesting combinations.

The rate is highest among Muslims at 17% followed by Christians at 14.6% and Hindus at 14.3%. But on a caste wise break-up, it is more rampant among the forwards (14.8%) compared to SCs ( 13.1%) and STs (14.6%).

Reached for comments, Kerala social welfare minister P K Sreemati Teacher told TOI that she was yet to see the report.

But BJP reacted predictably with the party's state vice president V Muraleedharan demanding setting up of a committee to study the condition of Hindus in the state.

Bishops want Catholic baby boom in Kerala

dimanche 16 septembre 2007

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, India (UCAN) : Worried over a dwindling Christian population in Kerala, a Catholic prelate in the southern Indian state has encouraged families to have more babies.

Archbishop Andrews Thazhath of Trichur, who has called for a parish poster campaign against birth control, says Kerala Christians recorded zero growth in terms of percentage of the population during the decade between the last two national censuses.

In 1991, Christians accounted for 19.5 percent of Kerala's 29.09 million people. The state's population increased to 31.84 million in 2001, but the percentage of Christians dropped to 19 percent.

« It's a dangerous trend. Our community is shrinking day by day, » Archbishop Thazhath told UCA News Sept 10. Other communities are « growing steadily » and the « trend should open our eyes, » he added.

In a pastoral letter read out the previous day in all parishes in his archdiocese, the prelate asked his people to uphold Christian morality. He also urged parishes to start poster campaigns to sensitize people about the sanctity of life and the threat abortion and contraception pose to this.

Catholics account for most of the state's Christians. The Syro-Malabar Church, an Oriental rite, has around 3.5 million members in 15 dioceses. It and the other Oriental rite in the state, the Syro-Malankara Church, which has about 500,000 members, trace their origins to Saint Thomas the Apostle and follow Syrian Church traditions. Another 1.5 million Catholics belong to the Latin rite, which uses the Roman liturgy introduced by Portuguese missioners in the 15th century. The three rites form the Indian Catholic Church.

According to Archbishop Thazhath, his Syro-Malabar Church is growing the slowest, since young parents opt for small families. « The only way to overcome this crisis is to have more babies and honor the sanctity of life, » he said.

All the archdiocese's parishes observed the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mother on Sept. 8 as Pro-life Day. The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC), the common forum of all the state's bishops, declared 2007 the Year of Life and Family.

The decline in Christian population has worried the Church for some time. In an August 2006 pastoral letter, Syro-Malabar Major Archbishop Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil of Ernakulam-Angamaly urged his people to have more babies.

Father Jose Kottayil, secretary of the KCBC Commission for Family, says large-scale migration and the « micro-family » syndrome have kept Kerala Catholics from increasing relative to other communities.

Thousands of families migrate annually to Australia, Canada, Europe, the Persian Gulf and the United States. « Our community is well educated and economically better off. Many young parents are having only one child to ensure social security, » even if they have the means to afford to raise more children, the priest said.

The Church has devised various ways to educate young parents about responsible parenthood, Father Kottayil continued. « We are going to educate our community to raise children in a socially and spiritually responsible environment. »

The Catholic Church plans to give educational scholarships to children from big families, the priest revealed.

« We will also educate (Catholics) to share their resources and provide job opportunities » when the children grow and enter the labor force, he said. « We have to change the mindset of the people. It may take some more time. »

'Jerry' Rao on Pakistan

http://www.indianexpress.com/story/222273._.html
Jerry (an otherwise excellent and incisive commentator) must have been a little drunk when he wrote this. Here are a few gaps in the Jerry Utalitarian Theory of Pakistan's existence to India (aka the buffer state)

1- The alleged powers we need buffering against (Iran and Afghanistan) are powers no more. It is laughable to think that an Afghan or Persian can raid India as in the days of Abdali & Nadir Shah

2- The power we do need buffers from - China - has used Pakistan to bleed India

3- The concept of a rational, buffer state that has passably good relations with us appeals to a rational entity - which Pakistan is eminently not

4- India has galloped forward from British inherited institutions of a liberal democracy, judiciary etc. - Pakistan as regressed. Indeed as Naipaul observed that due to it's Islamic yearning Pakistan has slowly undone the admitedly little good that British rule did. In fact they see themselves as the rightful inheritors of Abdali & Nadir Shah - only without the actual military might to take on India head-on in battle. Hence the use of terror

5- Pakistan breaking up will be a mighty mighty good thing (though I doubt this will happen - thanks to the Yanks) - and here is why.
-Afghanistan will be a logically rationalised, friendly state with the inclusion of the NWFP (now thats a buffer) - and we can use them to balance our regional power with Iran.
- Iran will most likely swallow the Baluch territories and have to deal with any insurrections there
- China will loose its best anti-India client and only non-Indian Ocean based route to middle-east energy - the Gwadar port. That opens up Iranian energy to us - and we can play them off against the Yanks who have not foothold in the region after their favorite client state is whipped
- The radicals etc. of Punjab state in Paksitan will at last have their land to lord over without others getting hurt in the process.

Three Gorges

sep 27, 2007

From: G

See above the problems with the Three Gorges project. Like you, I was unconvinced about the merits of a major river-linking project ... Smaller projects are feasible, but Indians should carefully study the catastrophe in Australia owing to the vast canal system they had constructed in the first half of the 20th century. This has many similarities with joining rivers and cannot now apparently be remedied at reasonable cost. Basically, the salt in the sub soil rose to the top and turned a vast swathe of Australia into desert, unsuited to any farming.

DO NOT FAIL TO PERFORM YOUR

DHARMIC DUTY

ON OCTOBER 2ND, TUESDAY, IN FRONT OF THE UNITED NATIONS

Dear Hindu colleagues:

Under the banner of
FORUM FOR GANDHI HERITAGE

Several Hindu organizations have joined hands to organize a peaceful protest demonstration against Sonia [Antonia Maino] Gandhi, the President of Congress Party and the Chairperson of UPA on October 2nd between 12:00 to 02:00 pm. in front of the United Nations at First Avenue and 47th Street [Dag. Hammarskjöld Plaza].

While we commend the declaration of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday as International Non-Violence Day by United Nations at India's request we highly condemn the usurpation of this historic moment by an unqualified politician whose policies, programs and values are antithesis of what Mahatma Gandhi  stood for.

We firmly believe that this strategy is motivated  by a devious desire to gain international legitimacy and political control in Indian governance, using the name of a world revered Indian icon – Mahatma Gandhi.   The fact is Sonia (Maino) Gandhi has no relationship whatsoever, either by blood, ideals and actions with the revered Father of the Nation of India.

Hence, we request you to please participate in this peaceful demonstration along with your friends.

Very truly yours

Narain Kataria

PRESS RELEASE

FORUM FOR GANDHI HERITAGE

Subject:  PROTEST AND FAST AGAINST SONIA (MAINO) GANDHI

Protest Details

Where:  United Nations, 47th St & 1st Ave, NY

When:   Oct 2, 2007, 12-2 PM

Fast & Prayer Details

Where:  Union Square (front of Gandhi Statue), 14th St & Union Square East,  NY

When:    Oct 1st and Oct 2nd,  10AM - 6PM

Hundreds from across the entire continental US are expected to participate in a peaceful protest,  fast and prayers, against Sonia (Antonia Maino) Gandhi, President of Congress Party and UPA Chairman on her representation on Oct 2nd at UN on International Non-Violence day.

While we commend the declaration of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday as International Non-Violence Day by United Nations at India's request, we highly condemn the usurpation of this historic moment by an unqualified politician whose policies, programs and values are antithesis of what Mahatma Gandhi ji stood for.

Mahatma Gandhi ji's life represented, truth, tolerance, non-violence, purity and resistance to injustice.  In today's world filled with  terrorism, religious fanaticism, political corruption,   Mahatma Gandhi ji's message is more relevant now than ever before.  As Martin Luther King said, "we tend to ignore Gandhi at our own risk".

However, Ms. Sonia Gandhi is entirely contrary to the principles and ethos of luminaries such as Mahatma Gandhi ji,  Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. and hence not worthy of being chosen to represent Gandhi ji.

We firmly believe that this strategy is motivated  by desire to gain international legitimacy and political control in Indian governance, using the name of a world revered Indian icon – Mahatma Gandhi ji.   The fact is Sonia (Maino) Gandhi has no relationship whatsoever, either by blood, ideals and actions with the revered Father of the Nation of India.

People who do not know, here in USA, United Nations and the rest of the World will assume that Sonia Gandhi is a relative of Mahatma Gandhi (because of the same last name) and she stood for his ideals.  To permit her to represent Gandhi ji would be a travesty in the name of Mahatma Gandhi ji.

It is imperative that we hold a sacred symbol such as Mahatma Gandhi ji as sacred, otherwise we will have little to hold on to.   We cannot and should not allow such sacred symbol usurped by those whose life is opposite to what he stood for in his life.

The forum therefore feels that Sonia (Maino) Gandhi selection to speak on behalf of Mahatma Gandhi ji is inappropriate.

We would be highly obliged, if you could kindly send your representative(s) to cover this historic event.  For further information, you may refer to website http://gandhiheritage.org or contact our media representative Naresh Sharma,  609-226-9702.

List of christist 'love' from all over the world

sep 27th, 2007

thought this was a nice sample of christist atrocities although i haven't personally verified the sources.

the antics of their godmen themselves will fill volumes. one recent case was the godman leo 23 or whatever who colluded with nazis. others in medieval times had a rollicking time, with many mistresses, illegitimate children and all that.

see the stuff about vietnam. this is what they want to import into india as well. similar things are happening already in formerly buddhist south korea.

Subject: [FHRS_USA] List of christian 'love' from all over the world

Listed are only events that solely occurred on command of church authorities or were committed in the name of Christianity. (List incomplete)

 Ancient Pagans

  • As soon as Christianity was legal (315), more and more pagan temples were destroyed by Christian mob. Pagan priests were killed.
  • Between 315 and 6th century thousands of pagan believers were slain.
  • Examples of destroyed Temples: the Sanctuary of Aesculap in Aegaea, the Temple of Aphrodite in Golgatha, Aphaka in Lebanon, the Heliopolis.
  • Christian priests such as Mark of Arethusa or Cyrill of Heliopolis were famous as "temple destroyer." [DA468]
  • Pagan services became punishable by death in 356. [DA468]
  • Christian Emperor Theodosius (408-450) even had children executed, because they had been playing with remains of pagan statues. [DA469]
According to Christian chroniclers he "followed meticulously all Christian teachings..."
  • In 6th century pagans were declared void of all rights.
  • In the early fourth century the philosopher Sopatros was executed on demand of Christian authorities. [DA466]
  • The world famous female philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria was torn to pieces with glass fragments by a hysterical Christian mob led by a Christian minister named Peter, in a church, in 415.
    [DO19-25]

 Mission

  • Emperor Karl (Charlemagne) in 782 had 4500 Saxons, unwilling to convert to Christianity, beheaded. [DO30]
  • Peasants of Steding (Germany) unwilling to pay suffocating church taxes: between 5,000 and 11,000 men, women and children slain 5/27/1234 near Altenesch/Germany. [WW223]
  • Battle of Belgrad 1456: 80,000 Turks slaughtered. [DO235]
  • 15th century Poland: 1019 churches and 17987 villages plundered by Knights of the Order. Victims unknown. [DO30]
  • 16th and 17th century Ireland. English troops "pacified and civilized" Ireland, where only Gaelic "wild Irish", "unreasonable beasts lived without any knowledge of God or good manners, in common of their goods, cattle, women, children and every other thing." One of the more successful soldiers, a certain Humphrey Gilbert, half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, ordered that "the heddes of all those (of what sort soever thei were) which were killed in the daie, should be cutte off from their bodies... and should bee laied on the ground by eche side of the waie", which effort to civilize the Irish indeed caused "greate terrour to the people when thei sawe the heddes of their dedde fathers, brothers, children, kinsfolke, and freinds on the grounde".
Tens of thousands of Gaelic Irish fell victim to the carnage. [SH99, 225]

 Crusades (1095-1291)

  • First Crusade: 1095 on command of pope Urban II. [WW11-41]
  • Semlin/Hungary 6/24/96 thousands slain. Wieselburg/Hungary 6/12/96 thousands. [WW23]
  • 9/9/96-9/26/96 Nikaia, Xerigordon (then turkish), thousands respectively. [WW25-27]
  • Until Jan 1098 a total of 40 capital cities and 200 castles conquered (number of slain unknown) [WW30]
  • after 6/3/98 Antiochia (then turkish) conquered, between 10,000 and 60,000 slain. 6/28/98 100,000 Turks (incl. women & children) killed. [WW32-35]
Here the Christians "did no other harm to the women found in [the enemy's] tents - save that they ran their lances through their bellies," according to Christian chronicler Fulcher of Chartres. [EC60]
  • Marra (Maraat an-numan) 12/11/98 thousands killed. Because of the subsequent famine "the already stinking corpses of the enemies were eaten by the Christians" said chronicler Albert Aquensis. [WW36]
  • Jerusalem conquered 7/15/1099 more than 60,000 victims (jewish, muslim, men, women, children). [WW37-40]
(In the words of one witness: "there [in front of Solomon's temple] was such a carnage that our people were wading ankle-deep in the blood of our foes", and after that "happily and crying for joy our people marched to our Saviour's tomb, to honour it and to pay off our debt of gratitude")
  • The Archbishop of Tyre, eye-witness, wrote: "It was impossible to look upon the vast numbers of the slain without horror; everywhere lay fragments of human bodies, and the very ground was covered with the blood of the slain. It was not alone the spectacle of headless bodies and mutilated limbs strewn in all directions that roused the horror of all who looked upon them. Still more dreadful was it to gaze upon the victors themselves, dripping with blood from head to foot, an ominous sight which brought terror to all who met them. It is reported that within the Temple enclosure alone about ten thousand infidels perished." [TG79]
  • Christian chronicler Eckehard of Aura noted that "even the following summer in all of palestine the air was polluted by the stench of decomposition". One million victims of the first crusade alone. [WW41]
  • Battle of Askalon, 8/12/1099. 200,000 heathens slaughtered "in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ". [WW45]
  • Fourth crusade: 4/12/1204 Constantinople sacked, number of victims unknown, numerous thousands, many of them Christian. [WW141-148]
  • Rest of Crusades in less detail: until the fall of Akkon 1291 probably 20 million victims (in the Holy land and Arab/Turkish areas alone). [WW224]

Note: All figures according to contemporary (Christian) chroniclers.

 Heretics

  • Already in 385 C.E. the first Christians, the Spanish Priscillianus and six followers, were beheaded for heresy in Trier/Germany [DO26]
  • Manichaean heresy: a crypto-Christian sect decent enough to practice birth control (and thus not as irresponsible as faithful Catholics) was exterminated in huge campaigns all over the Roman empire between 372 C.E . and 444 C.E. Numerous thousands of victims. [NC]
  • Albigensians: the first Crusade intended to slay other Christians. [DO29]
The Albigensians (cathars = Christians allegedly that have all rarely sucked) viewed themselves as good Christians, but would not accept roman Catholic rule, and taxes, and prohibition of birth control. [NC]
Begin of violence: on command of pope Innocent III (greatest single pre-nazi mass murderer) in 1209. Bezirs (today France) 7/22/1209 destroyed, all the inhabitants were slaughtered. Victims (including Catholics refusing to turn over their heretic neighbours and friends) 20,000-70,000. [WW179-181]
  • Carcassonne 8/15/1209, thousands slain. Other cities followed. [WW181]
  • subsequent 20 years of war until nearly all Cathars (probably half the population of the Languedoc, today southern France) were exterminated. [WW183]
  • After the war ended (1229) the Inquisition was founded 1232 to search and destroy surviving/hiding heretics. Last Cathars burned at the stake 1324. [WW183]
  • Estimated one million victims (cathar heresy alone), [WW183]
  • Other heresies: Waldensians, Paulikians, Runcarians, Josephites, and many others. Most of these sects exterminated, (I believe some Waldensians live today, yet they had to endure 600 years of persecution) I estimate at least hundred thousand victims (including the Spanish inquisition but excluding victims in the New World).
  • Spanish Inquisitor Torquemada alone allegedly responsible for 10,220 burnings. [DO28]
  • John Huss, a critic of papal infallibility and indulgences, was burned at the stake in 1415. [LI475-522]
  • University professor B.Hubmaier burned at the stake 1538 in Vienna. [DO59]
  • Giordano Bruno, Dominican monk, after having been incarcerated for seven years, was burned at the stake for heresy on the Campo dei Fiori (Rome) on 2/17/1600.

 Witches

  • from the beginning of Christianity to 1484 probably more than several thousand.
  • in the era of witch hunting (1484-1750) according to modern scholars several hundred thousand (about 80% female) burned at the stake or hanged. [WV]
  • incomplete list of documented cases:
The Burning of Witches - A Chronicle of the Burning Times

  • 17th century: Catholics slay Gaspard de Coligny, a Protestant leader. After murdering him, the Catholic mob mutilated his body, "cutting off his head, his hands, and his genitals... and then dumped him into the river [...but] then, deciding that it was not worthy of being food for the fish, they hauled it out again [... and] dragged what was left ... to the gallows of Montfaulcon, 'to be meat and carrion for maggots and crows'." [SH191]
  • 17th century: Catholics sack the city of Magdeburg/Germany: roughly 30,000 Protestants were slain. "In a single church fifty women were found beheaded," reported poet Friedrich Schiller, "and infants still sucking the breasts of their lifeless mothers." [SH191]
  • 17th century 30 years' war (Catholic vs. Protestant): at least 40% of population decimated, mostly in Germany. [DO31-32]

 Jews

  • Already in the 4th and 5th centuries synagogues were burned by Christians. Number of Jews slain unknown.
  • In the middle of the fourth century the first synagogue was destroyed on command of bishop Innocentius of Dertona in Northern Italy. The first synagogue known to have been burned down was near the river Euphrat, on command of the bishop of Kallinikon in the year 388. [DA450]
  • 17. Council of Toledo 694: Jews were enslaved, their property confiscated, and their children forcibly baptized. [DA454]
  • The Bishop of Limoges (France) in 1010 had the cities' Jews, who would not convert to Christianity, expelled or killed. [DA453]
  • First Crusade: Thousands of Jews slaughtered 1096, maybe 12.000 total. Places: Worms 5/18/1096, Mainz 5/27/1096 (1100 persons), Cologne, Neuss, Altenahr, Wevelinghoven, Xanten, Moers, Dortmund, Kerpen, Trier, Metz, Regensburg, Prag and others (All locations Germany except Metz/France, Prag/Czech) [EJ]
  • Second Crusade: 1147. Several hundred Jews were slain in Ham, Sully, Carentan, and Rameru (all locations in France). [WW57]
  • Third Crusade: English Jewish communities sacked 1189/90. [DO40]
  • Fulda/Germany 1235: 34 Jewish men and women slain. [DO41]
  • 1257, 1267: Jewish communities of London, Canterbury, Northampton, Lincoln, Cambridge, and others exterminated. [DO41]
  • 1290 in Bohemian (Poland) allegedly 10,000 Jews killed. [DO41]
  • 1337 Starting in Deggendorf/Germany a Jew-killing craze reaches 51 towns in Bavaria, Austria, Poland. [DO41]
  • 1348 All Jews of Basel/Switzerland and Strasbourg/France (two thousand) burned. [DO41]
  • 1349 In more than 350 towns in Germany all Jews murdered, mostly burned alive (in this one year more Jews were killed than Christians in 200 years of ancient Roman persecution of Christians). [DO42]
  • 1389 In Prag 3,000 Jews were slaughtered. [DO42]
  • 1391 Seville's Jews killed (Archbishop Martinez leading). 4,000 were slain, 25,000 sold as slaves. [DA454] Their identification was made easy by the brightly colored "badges of shame" that all jews above the age of ten had been forced to wear.
  • 1492: In the year Columbus set sail to conquer a New World, more than 150,000 Jews were expelled from Spain, many died on their way: 6/30/1492. [MM470-476]
  • 1648 Chmielnitzki massacres: In Poland about 200,000 Jews were slain. [DO43]

(I feel sick ...) this goes on and on, century after century, right into the kilns of Auschwitz.

 Native Peoples

  • Beginning with Columbus (a former slave trader and would-be Holy Crusader) the conquest of the New World began, as usual understood as a means to propagate Christianity.
  • Within hours of landfall on the first inhabited island he encountered in the Caribbean, Columbus seized and carried off six native people who, he said, "ought to be good servants ... [and] would easily be made Christians, because it seemed to me that they belonged to no religion." [SH200]
While Columbus described the Indians as "idolators" and "slaves, as many as [the Crown] shall order," his pal Michele de Cuneo, Italian nobleman, referred to the natives as "beasts" because "they eat when they are hungry," and made love "openly whenever they feel like it." [SH204-205]
  • On every island he set foot on, Columbus planted a cross, "making the declarations that are required" - the requerimiento - to claim the ownership for his Catholic patrons in Spain. And "nobody objected." If the Indians refused or delayed their acceptance (or understanding), the requerimiento continued:
I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter in your country and shall make war against you ... and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church ... and shall do you all mischief that we can, as to vassals who do not obey and refuse to receive their lord and resist and contradict him." [SH66]

  • Likewise in the words of John Winthrop, first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony: "justifieinge the undertakeres of the intended Plantation in New England ... to carry the Gospell into those parts of the world, ... and to raise a Bulworke against the kingdome of the Ante-Christ." [SH235]
  • In average two thirds of the native population were killed by colonist-imported smallpox before violence began. This was a great sign of "the marvelous goodness and providence of God" to the Christians of course, e.g. the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony wrote in 1634, as "for the natives, they are near all dead of the smallpox, so as the Lord hath cleared our title to what we possess." [SH109,238]
  • On Hispaniola alone, on Columbus visits, the native population (Arawak), a rather harmless and happy people living on an island of abundant natural resources, a literal paradise, soon mourned 50,000 dead. [SH204]
  • The surviving Indians fell victim to rape, murder, enslavement and spanish raids.
  • As one of the culprits wrote: "So many Indians died that they could not be counted, all through the land the Indians lay dead everywhere. The stench was very great and pestiferous." [SH69]
  • The indian chief Hatuey fled with his people but was captured and burned alive. As "they were tying him to the stake a Franciscan friar urged him to take Jesus to his heart so that his soul might go to heaven, rather than descend into hell. Hatuey replied that if heaven was where the Christians went, he would rather go to hell." [SH70]
  • What happened to his people was described by an eyewitness:
"The Spaniards found pleasure in inventing all kinds of odd cruelties ... They built a long gibbet, long enough for the toes to touch the ground to prevent strangling, and hanged thirteen [natives] at a time in honor of Christ Our Saviour and the twelve Apostles... then, straw was wrapped around their torn bodies and they were burned alive." [SH72]
    Or, on another occasion:
"The Spaniards cut off the arm of one, the leg or hip of another, and from some their heads at one stroke, like butchers cutting up beef and mutton for market. Six hundred, including the cacique, were thus slain like brute beasts...Vasco [de Balboa] ordered forty of them to be torn to pieces by dogs." [SH83]
  • The "island's population of about eight million people at the time of Columbus's arrival in 1492 already had declined by a third to a half before the year 1496 was out." Eventually all the island's natives were exterminated, so the Spaniards were "forced" to import slaves from other caribbean islands, who soon suffered the same fate. Thus "the Caribbean's millions of native people [were] thereby effectively liquidated in barely a quarter of a century". [SH72-73] "In less than the normal lifetime of a single human being, an entire culture of millions of people, thousands of years resident in their homeland, had been exterminated." [SH75]
  • "And then the Spanish turned their attention to the mainland of Mexico and Central America. The slaughter had barely begun. The exquisite city of Tenochtitln [Mexico city] was next." [SH75]
  • Cortez, Pizarro, De Soto and hundreds of other spanish conquistadors likewise sacked southern and mesoamerican civilizations in the name of Christ (De Soto also sacked Florida).
  • "When the 16th century ended, some 200,000 Spaniards had moved to the Americas. By that time probably more than 60,000,000 natives were dead." [SH95]

Of course no different were the founders of what today is the US of Amerikkka.

  • Although none of the settlers would have survived winter without native help, they soon set out to expel and exterminate the Indians. Warfare among (north American) Indians was rather harmless, in comparison to European standards, and was meant to avenge insults rather than conquer land. In the words of some of the pilgrim fathers: "Their Warres are farre less bloudy...", so that there usually was "no great slawter of nether side". Indeed, "they might fight seven yeares and not kill seven men." What is more, the Indians usually spared women and children. [SH111]
  • In the spring of 1612 some English colonists found life among the (generally friendly and generous) natives attractive enough to leave Jamestown - "being idell ... did runne away unto the Indyans," - to live among them (that probably solved a sex problem).
"Governor Thomas Dale had them hunted down and executed: 'Some he apointed (sic) to be hanged Some burned Some to be broken upon wheles, others to be staked and some shott to deathe'." [SH105] Of course these elegant measures were restricted for fellow englishmen: "This was the treatment for those who wished to act like Indians. For those who had no choice in the matter, because they were the native people of Virginia" methods were different: "when an Indian was accused by an Englishman of stealing a cup and failing to return it, the English response was to attack the natives in force, burning the entire community" down. [SH105]
  • On the territory that is now Massachusetts the founding fathers of the colonies were committing genocide, in what has become known as the "Peqout War". The killers were New England Puritan Christians, refugees from persecution in their own home country England.
  • When however, a dead colonist was found, apparently killed by Narragansett Indians, the Puritan colonists wanted revenge. Despite the Indian chief's pledge they attacked.
Somehow they seem to have lost the idea of what they were after, because when they were greeted by Pequot Indians (long-time foes of the Narragansetts) the troops nevertheless made war on the Pequots and burned their villages.
The puritan commander-in-charge John Mason after one massacre wrote: "And indeed such a dreadful Terror did the Almighty let fall upon their Spirits, that they would fly from us and run into the very Flames, where many of them perished ... God was above them, who laughed his Enemies and the Enemies of his People to Scorn, making them as a fiery Oven ... Thus did the Lord judge among the Heathen, filling the Place with dead Bodies": men, women, children. [SH113-114]
  • So "the Lord was pleased to smite our Enemies in the hinder Parts, and to give us their land for an inheritance". [SH111].
  • Because of his readers' assumed knowledge of Deuteronomy, there was no need for Mason to quote the words that immediately follow:
"Thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth. But thou shalt utterly destroy them..." (Deut 20)
  • Mason's comrade Underhill recalled how "great and doleful was the bloody sight to the view of the young soldiers" yet reassured his readers that "sometimes the Scripture declareth women and children must perish with their parents". [SH114]
  • Other Indians were killed in successful plots of poisoning. The colonists even had dogs especially trained to kill Indians and to devour children from their mothers breasts, in the colonists' own words: "blood Hounds to draw after them, and Mastives to seaze them." (This was inspired by spanish methods of the time)
In this way they continued until the extermination of the Pequots was near. [SH107-119]
  • The surviving handful of Indians "were parceled out to live in servitude. John Endicott and his pastor wrote to the governor asking for 'a share' of the captives, specifically 'a young woman or girle and a boy if you thinke good'." [SH115]
  • Other tribes were to follow the same path.
  • Comment the Christian exterminators: "God's Will, which will at last give us cause to say: How Great is His Goodness! and How Great is his Beauty!"
"Thus doth the Lord Jesus make them to bow before him, and to lick the Dust!" [TA]
  • Like today, lying was OK to Christians then. "Peace treaties were signed with every intention to violate them: when the Indians 'grow secure uppon (sic) the treatie', advised the Council of State in Virginia, 'we shall have the better Advantage both to surprise them, & cutt downe theire Corne'." [SH106]
  • In 1624 sixty heavily armed Englishmen cut down 800 defenseless Indian men, women and children. [SH107]
  • In a single massacre in "King Philip's War" of 1675 and 1676 some "600 Indians were destroyed. A delighted Cotton Mather, revered pastor of the Second Church in Boston, later referred to the slaughter as a 'barbeque'." [SH115]
  • To summarize: Before the arrival of the English, the western Abenaki people in New Hampshire and Vermont had numbered 12,000. Less than half a century later about 250 remained alive - a destruction rate of 98%. The Pocumtuck people had numbered more than 18,000, fifty years later they were down to 920 - 95% destroyed. The Quiripi-Unquachog people had numbered about 30,000, fifty years later they were down to 1500 - 95% destroyed. The Massachusetts people had numbered at least 44,000, fifty years later barely 6000 were alive - 81% destroyed. [SH118] These are only a few examples of the multitude of tribes living before Christian colonists set their foot on the New World. All this was before the smallpox epidemics of 1677 and 1678 had occurred. And the carnage was not over then.
  • All the above was only the beginning of the European colonization, it was before the frontier age actually had begun.
  • A total of maybe more than 150 million Indians (of both Americas) were destroyed in the period of 1500 to 1900, as an average two thirds by smallpox and other epidemics, that leaves some 50 million killed directly by violence, bad treatment and slavery.
  • In many countries, such as Brazil, and Guatemala, this continues even today.

More Glorious events in US history

  • Reverend Solomon Stoddard, one of New England's most esteemed religious leaders, in "1703 formally proposed to the Massachusetts Governor that the colonists be given the financial wherewithal to purchase and train large packs of dogs 'to hunt Indians as they do bears'." [SH241]
  • Massacre of Sand Creek, Colorado 11/29/1864. Colonel John Chivington, a former Methodist minister and still elder in the church ("I long to be wading in gore") had a Cheyenne village of about 600, mostly women and children, gunned down despite the chiefs' waving with a white flag: 400-500 killed.
From an eye-witness account: "There were some thirty or forty squaws collected in a hole for protection; they sent out a little girl about six years old with a white flag on a stick; she had not proceeded but a few steps when she was shot and killed. All the squaws in that hole were afterwards killed ..." [SH131]
    More gory details.
  • By the 1860s, "in Hawai'i the Reverend Rufus Anderson surveyed the carnage that by then had reduced those islands' native population by 90 percent or more, and he declined to see it as tragedy; the expected total die-off of the Hawaiian population was only natural, this missionary said, somewhat equivalent to 'the amputation of diseased members of the body'." [SH244]

 20th Century Church Atrocities

  • Catholic extermination camps
Surpisingly few know that Nazi extermination camps in World War II were by no means the only ones in Europe at the time. In the years 1942-1943 also in Croatia existed numerous extermination camps, run by Catholic Ustasha under their dictator Ante Paveli, a practising Catholic and regular visitor to the then pope. There were even concentration camps exclusively for children!
In these camps - the most notorious was Jasenovac, headed by a Franciscan friar - orthodox-Christian serbians (and a substantial number of Jews) were murdered. Like the Nazis the Catholic Ustasha burned their victims in kilns, alive (the Nazis were decent enough to have their victims gassed first). But most of the victims were simply stabbed, slain or shot to death, the number of them being estimated between 300,000 and 600,000, in a rather tiny country. Many of the killers were Franciscan friars. The atrocities were appalling enough to induce bystanders of the Nazi "Sicherheitsdient der SS", watching, to complain about them to Hitler (who did not listen). The pope knew about these events and did nothing to prevent them. [MV]
  • Catholic terror in Vietnam
In 1954 Vietnamese freedom fighters - the Viet Minh - had finally defeated the French colonial government in North Vietnam, which by then had been supported by U.S. funds amounting to more than $2 billion. Although the victorious assured religious freedom to all (most non-buddhist Vietnamese were Catholics), due to huge anticommunist propaganda campaigns many Catholics fled to the South. With the help of Catholic lobbies in Washington and Cardinal Spellman, the Vatican's spokesman in U.S. politics, who later on would call the U.S. forces in Vietnam "Soldiers of Christ", a scheme was concocted to prevent democratic elections which could have brought the communist Viet Minh to power in the South as well, and the fanatic Catholic Ngo Dinh Diem was made president of South Vietnam. [MW16ff]
Diem saw to it that U.S. aid, food, technical and general assistance was given to Catholics alone, Buddhist individuals and villages were ignored or had to pay for the food aids which were given to Catholics for free. The only religious denomination to be supported was Roman Catholicism.
The Vietnamese McCarthyism turned even more vicious than its American counterpart. By 1956 Diem promulgated a presidential order which read:
    • "Individuals considered dangerous to the national defense and common security may be confined by executive order, to a concentration camp."

Supposedly to fight communism, thousands of buddhist protesters and monks were imprisoned in "detention camps." Out of protest dozens of buddhist teachers - male and female - and monks poured gasoline over themselves and burned themselves. ( Note that Buddhists burned themselves: in comparison Christians tend to burn others). Meanwhile some of the prison camps, which in the meantime were filled with Protestant and even Catholic protesters as well, had turned into no-nonsense death camps. It is estimated that during this period of terror (1955-1960) at least 24,000 were wounded - mostly in street riots - 80,000 people were executed, 275,000 had been detained or tortured, and about 500,000 were sent to concentration or detention camps. [MW76-89].
To support this kind of government in the next decade thousands of American GI's lost their life.

  • Christianity kills the cat
On July 1, 1976, Anneliese Michel, a 23-year-old student of a teachers college in Germany, died: she starved herself to death. For months she had been haunted by demonic visions and apparitions, and for months two Catholic priests - with explicit approval of the Catholic bishop of Wrzburg - additionally pestered and tormented the wretched girl with their exorcist rituals. After her death in Klingenberg hospital - her body was littered with wounds - her parents, both of them fanatical Catholics, were sentenced to six months for not having called for medical help. None of the priests was punished: on the contrary, Miss Michel's grave today is a place of pilgrimage and worship for a number of similarly faithful Catholics (in the seventeenth century Wrzburg was notorious for it's extensive witch burnings).
This case is only the tip of an iceberg of such evil superstition and has become known only because of its lethal outcome. [SP80]
  • Rwanda Massacres
In 1994 in the small african country of Rwanda in just a few months several hundred thousand civilians were butchered, apparently a conflict of the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups.
For quite some time I heard only rumours about Catholic clergy actively involved in the 1994 Rwanda massacres. Odd denials of involvement were printed in Catholic church journals, before even anybody had openly accused members of the church.
Then, 10/10/96, in the newscast of S2 Aktuell, Germany - a station not at all critical to Christianity - the following was stated:
    • "Anglican as well as Catholic priests and nuns are suspect of having actively participated in murders. Especially the conduct of a certain Catholic priest has been occupying the public mind in Rwanda's capital Kigali for months. He was minister of the church of the Holy Family and allegedly murdered Tutsis in the most brutal manner. He is reported to have accompanied marauding Hutu militia with a gun in his cowl. In fact there has been a bloody slaughter of Tutsis seeking shelter in his parish. Even two years after the massacres many Catholics refuse to set foot on the threshold of their church, because to them the participation of a certain part of the clergy in the slaughter is well established. There is almost no church in Rwanda that has not seen refugees - women, children, old - being brutally butchered facing the crucifix.
According to eyewitnesses clergymen gave away hiding Tutsis and turned them over to the machetes of the Hutu militia.
In connection with these events again and again two Benedictine nuns are mentioned, both of whom have fled into a Belgian monastery in the meantime to avoid prosecution. According to survivors one of them called the Hutu killers and led them to several thousand people who had sought shelter in her monastery. By force the doomed were driven out of the churchyard and were murdered in the presence of the nun right in front of the gate. The other one is also reported to have directly cooperated with the murderers of the Hutu militia. In her case again witnesses report that she watched the slaughtering of people in cold blood and without showing response. She is even accused of having procured some petrol used by the killers to set on fire and burn their victims alive..." [S2]
  • As can be seen from these events, to Christianity the Dark Ages never come to an end.

If today Christians talk to me about morality, this is why they make me sick.
